Taking place over Mother’s Day weekend in May (8th – 11th, 2026), this four-day floral extravaganza transforms the charming streets of Niagara-on-the-Lake into a vibrant, living canvas of colour, creativity, and community spirit.

This event was a highlight for me, and I can’t wait to visit again for what I consider the most beautiful weekend of the year!

The Perfect May Weekend Escape

May is that sweet spot in the Niagara Region, when the air feels fresh, patios start to buzz, and everything begins to bloom. There’s something undeniably uplifting about getting outside after a long winter, and this festival offers the ideal excuse to do just that!

Niagara-on-the-Lake is already known for its storybook charm, but during Niagara-on-the-Lake In Bloom, it feels even more magical. 

My mom and I went during 2025 for its first year, and it was so relaxed! It’s a time where you can sip coffee in the morning, wander, wander through flower-lined streets, and enjoy a glass of local wine in the afternoon, all surrounded by breathtaking floral displays.

It’s also timed perfectly with cherry blossom season and gorgeous blooms around town!

The festival offers a laid-back yet lively atmosphere that’s easy to enjoy at your own pace, regardless of if you’re visiting for a day trip or a weekend!

Step Into a Floral Wonderland

The streets of historic Old Town are dotted with stunning floral installations around every corner. This year’s theme for the 2026 Niagara-on-the-Lake In Bloom is “All Creatures BIG and Small,” bringing a whimsical twist to the experience, with imaginative designs crafted by talented local florists, designers, and horticulturists.

From delicate butterflies to bold, larger-than-life creations, the town becomes an immersive outdoor gallery celebrating both nature and artistry.

The best part? The outdoor installations are completely free to explore. Plus, there are so many free things to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake, you can easily stretch this over a span of a couple days!

You will need tickets to access the Gardens at the Pillar and Post, which truly can’t be missed. I could’ve spent the entire day there!

Parking is free at the Pillar and Post, so be sure to arrive early to grab a spot! You can also hop on a trolley there which will stop at various points around town should you wish to explore town afterwards (a definite must)!

A Thoughtful and Memorable Mother’s Day Idea

If you’re searching for a meaningful way to celebrate Mother’s Day, this festival checks all the boxes. Instead of the usual gifts, why not give the experience of quality time, fresh air, and beautiful surroundings?

Start the day with a stroll through the free outdoor installations, grab lunch at a local café or an elegant afternoon tea at the Prince of Wales or HobNob Restaurant, or a relaxing garden workshop. 

You can also opt to take part in the festival’s own Bubbles & Blooms Afternoon Tea or the Bonnet Luncheon where you’re encouraged to wear your favourite bonnet or hat to win a prize!

There are so many photo-worthy moments along the way, and because the installations are spread throughout the town, you can easily tailor the day to suit any pace.

Walking around town also gives you the perfect opportunity to pop into the boutique shops along Queen Street. You never know what you’ll find! We grabbed the opportunity to stop into the Niagara Apothecary – beautifully restored 1869 pharmacy, along with a few of our favourite shops.

More Than Just Flowers

While the floral displays are the heart of the festival, there’s so much more to enjoy. Niagara-on-the-Lake In Bloom brings together a full lineup of garden-inspired experiences, including:

• The Bonnet Luncheon: a signature event combining elegance, creativity, and spring fashion
• The Garden Fair: featuring boutique vendors, expert garden talks, workshops, and delicious food and drink
• Culinary events and tastings: highlighting local flavours and seasonal ingredients
• Hands-on workshops and seminars: perfect for garden enthusiasts and curious beginners alike

The festival’s pièce de résistance is the “Birds of a Feather” Gala Dinner – an unforgettable evening that blends delicious food, wine, and stunning designs – which you could probably guess, this year’s theme is birds!

While much of the festival can be enjoyed freely throughout the town, some experiences do require tickets. These include:

Niagara-on-the-Lake In Bloom is the epitome of a spring celebration and is the perfect way to spend a spring day in Niagara, soaking in the best of what the season offers.

Whether you’re planning a Mother’s Day outing, a romantic weekend, or a spring getaway with friends, this festival offers a refreshing way to make the most of May.

If time allows, and if you have a vehicle, it’s well worth your time to drive 15 minutes to Niagara Falls to visit the Centennial Lilac Garden too, as it will be in bloom with over 1200 lilac bushes! It’s my favourite place to visit during the spring and a peaceful way to enjoy the sunshine!

A Fort Built for War

Fort George was originally constructed between 1796 and 1799 by the British Army to guard the Niagara River and protect Upper Canada from potential American attacks. Its location directly across from Fort Niagara in New York made it a prime military post. That also meant it was a prime target.

Fort George played a key role during the War of 1812, serving as the headquarters for the British Army along the Niagara frontier. It was the site of several major battles – the most known being the Battle of Fort George in 1813 – and even briefly fell under American control before being retaken by British forces later that year.

It’s been fully restored to reflect what it would have looked like in the early 1800s. We spent almost 3 hours here but could’ve easily stayed longer!

Rebuilt and Brought Back to Life

The original fort was largely destroyed during the conflict, but thanks to meticulous reconstruction work in the late 1930s (part of a Depression-era public works project), Fort George now stands as a faithful recreation of what it would have looked like in the early 1800s.

And it’s not just a collection of old buildings – this is living history at its best! You’ll find re-enactors cooking over open fires, firing muskets, and sharing stories from the past.

It’s a fantastic spot to bring kids (and kids at heart!) and it was so nice to see families and kids roaming the grounds and being intrigued by all that’s going on.

The programming is excellent and you’ll find numerous demonstrations throughout the day, from a flag-raising ceremony, musket firing, history talks, Fife and Drum Corps music, and on special events throughout the year.

Fort George Today: Why It’s Worth the Trip

Fort George is part of Parks Canada and was designated a National Historic Site in 1921. It’s incredibly well-preserved and maintained and all the staff are so friendly and knowledgeable.

I think it’s one of the best historic attractions in the region. I recommend setting aside a few hours for this activity if you’re planning to visit Niagara-on-the-Lake.

It’s also a perfect pairing with other Niagara-on-the-Lake activities: enjoy a morning at the fort, then grab lunch in town, see a play at Shaw Festival, visit local wineries, or take a riverside stroll along the Niagara Parkway. There are a ton of free things to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake too!

Cherry Lane Farm — Vineland

Cherry Lane is Niagara’s oldest cherry farm! The Smith family has been farming for 10 generations, and they’ve called their Vineland property home since 1908 – complete with a house built in 1873! 

Jen Smith is now the 10th generation farmer who oversees 400 acres of juicy cherries, peaches, and pears at Cherry Lane. Their market has a great selection of fruit in summer and a year-round market selling preserves, frozen fruit, gifts and more. What I love most is their 24/7 vending machine for tart cherry juice concentrate!

Bizjak Farms — Vineland

Bizjak Farms is a multi-generational, family-run farm with deep roots in Niagara’s tender fruit tradition. It all began when Louis and Maria Bizjak came to Canada from Slovenia in 1968 and moved to Beamsville in 1973 with dreams of building a legacy. 

They bought a charming century home on 14 acres of fruit trees – mostly peaches, but also cherries, apricots, plums, apples, and pears – and got to work while raising six kids.

It continues to be a family tradition today with Louis and Maria’s son Milan, daughter Mimi, and son-in-law Ignacio working two farms, growing fruit in sustainable and environmentally friendly ways, and selling it at their farm stands.

DeVries Fruit Farm — Fenwick

DeVries Fruit Farm all started when Leo DeVries grew up working on fruit farms and dreamed of owning one someday. That dream became reality in 1984 when he and his wife Margaret bought a small property with acres of pear trees, overgrown apple trees, and plenty of open space.

Leo planned to grow sour cherries while continuing his career as a carpenter. But since cherry trees take about seven years to produce fruit, apple and peach trees were added, too.  As crops thrived and nearby orchards became available to rent, Leo made farming his full-time job.

As the farm expanded, so did the family’s involvement. With sons Dan and Mark joining full time, Devries has become a true family-run success story.

They have a full country market vibe open year-round with friendly staff, baked goods, and U-pick strawberries in early summer along with PYO peaches. If you can’t make it to their farm, you’ll also find them at the Niagara Falls Farmers Market and St Catharines Farmers Markets on Saturdays from May – October.

Hildreth Farm Market — Beamsville

Hildreth Farm Market is a charming roadside market that’s been around for four generations! They’ve long been known in their community for the awesome market that offers all kinds of seasonal produce, delicious pies, flowers, and preserves. 

And if you love corn, this is THE place to get it! It’s the best tasting corn we’ve ever had and we always make a point to eat our weight in it every year.

The farm has long offered pick‑your‑own strawberries and PYO cherries and a seasonal market stand beloved for Ontario sweet corn and seasonal baked goods.

 Location: 5528 Greenlane, Beamsville

Epp Farms — Niagara-on-the-Lake

Tucked away in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Epp Family Fruit Farm has grown into one of the region’s peach powerhouses! What started as land once owned by Canadian Canners is now a bustling, family-run orchard. 

Since the late 1960s, the Epp family has welcomed seasonal workers from Jamaica, building friendships and a strong farm community along the way, at one point bringing on over 100 seasonal workers at harvest time. They continue to do what they do best: growing amazing fruit and treating everyone like family.

 Location: 1023 East & West Line and 15896 Niagara River Pkwy, Niagara-on-the-Lake

Thwaites Farms — Niagara-on-the-Lake

The Thwaites family story starts in 1909 with 14-year-old Reginald F. Thwaites, who came to Canada from England through an orphanage immigration program. He started out on cattle and hay farms, but it was fruit farming that was his passion. By 1920, Reg had saved enough to buy his own fruit farm in Jordan Station.

His son Ron took over in 1938 when Reg’s health declined—quitting school in Grade 9 to run the farm full-time. After serving in WWII, Ron returned home and bought a 20-acre fruit farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake. That little farm – with a small house, barn, and one horse – became the heart of Thwaites Farms, and the original farmhouse and barn still stand today!

Thwaites Farms continues to grow – powered by four generations of passion, hard work, and plenty of peaches.

Mathias Farms — Ridgeville

Mathias Farms has been growing goodness for three generations right in the heart of Niagara. In 1974, siblings Beth and Tom took the reins from their father Joe and have been running the show ever since. 

With a whole lot of heart and a serious work ethic, they’ve dedicated themselves to growing some of the tastiest fruit around—season after season, year after year!

This is my favourite place to go cherry picking. It’s a great family-friendly spot that’s relaxed and is a great way to spend a summer day in Niagara!

Overholt Orchards Farm Market — St. Catharines

Overholt Orchards Farm Market has been part of Niagara’s farming tradition for generations! With roots going back to the 1800s, the Overholt family is of Mennonite heritage and when they settled in Ontario, they brought their tradition of strong work ethic, a love for the land, and a spirit of community.

Today, Overholt Orchards is proud to keep that tradition alive, growing delicious fruit, vegetables, flowers, and working with amazing local bakers and makers to stock their stands with the best of Niagara.

 Location: 1656 Seventh Street Louth, St Catharines

Warner Orchards — Beamsville

Family farmed since 1970, Warner Orchards has two farm stands, and one is right in the heart of Beamsville. Offering fresh picked seasonal fruit and vegetables, these self-serve farm market stands have some different finds than other markets: produce like donut peaches and cucamelons!

Now that Lincoln Ave has sidewalks, it’s even more accessible by foot!

When most people hear the name Laura Secord, they think of the chocolates. But tucked away in the picturesque village of Queenston, the Laura Secord Homestead offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of Canada’s most celebrated heroines. 

More than just a historic house, this lovingly restored home tells the story of bravery, perseverance, and the early days of a nation shaped by conflict.

Who Was Laura Secord?

Laura Secord is a name that resonates with many Canadians, often linked to tales of heroism during the War of 1812. But beyond the famous chocolate brand that bears her name lies the remarkable story of a woman who defied the odds to make history.

In June of 1813, Americans barged their way into her home which she shared with her husband, James. They ordered her to feed them dinner and spoke freely about their plans to try and defeat the British Army.

After overhearing American officers discussing a planned surprise attack on British troops (and not expecting her to know any different and assuming she would have no one to tell), Laura embarked on a grueling 32 kilometre trek through enemy territory, woods, and swamps to warn Lieutenant James FitzGibbon. 

Laura was 37 years old and had 5 children at the time, and this unfathomable journey took her 18 hours to do. She set off in her regular clothes to not draw any attention to herself, and struggled through deep brush and exhaution before coming face-to-face with a Chief of an Iroquois tribe. This tribe understood her pleas, and assisted her to her final destination.

It was because of Laura Secord’s bravery that the British forces, along with hundreds of First Nations warriors, made a surprise attack on the Americans before they could carry out their surprise attack, and defeated the Americans at the Battle of Beaver Dams and prevented any further American forces from coming into Canada.

Guides dressed in early 19th-century attire bring the home to life with stories of Laura, her family, and the War of 1812 as you tour through the rooms decorated with period furniture and artifacts. It gives you a real sense of what life was like over 200 years ago.

It was later donated to the Niagara Parks Commission and remains one of the best-preserved historic homes in the region, along with another one of my favourites, McFarland House (a fantastic spot for afternoon tea, too)!

Then, in 1860, the Prince of Wales (who would later become King Edward VII) visited Niagara Falls. He heard Laura’s story and was so impressed that he awarded her £100 for her bravery and her role in helping defeat the American forces.

That £100 might not sound like much today—about $170 Canadian—but back in 1865, it would’ve been worth around $3,676! A decent chunk of change for the time… though still kind of underwhelming considering what she did.

Laura lived a long life, passing away at 93. She’s buried in Drummond Hill Cemetery in Niagara Falls (considered to be one of the most haunted places in Niagara), right beside her husband James.

Follow in the Footsteps of Laura Secord!

Did you know you can follow the same 32 km journey Laura took? It’s called the Laura Secord Legacy trail which leads you from the Laura Secord Homestead and ends at Decew House Heritage Park. 

There’s an amazing step by step trail guide found on the Friends of Laura Secord site. I’ve done bits of this trail (as some of it connects with the Bruce Trail) and it’s incredible that she managed to do this trek in nothing more than what looks like ballet flats!

For anyone interested in Canada’s roots, military history, or simply looking to explore something unique, Old Fort Erie offers an experience that’s both moving and unforgettable.

A Brief History of Old Fort Erie 

Originally built by the British in 1764 after the Seven Years’ War, this was the first fort built in what would become Ontario. It was originally constructed as a wooden structure until later being rebuilt in the early 1800s. 

For years, it played a key role as a busy supply depot and port for British soldiers, Loyalist Rangers, and Six Nations Warriors, with ships loaded up with goods, troops, and passengers heading off to the Upper Great Lakes.

But its real claim to fame came during the War of 1812. Old Fort Erie was the site of Canada’s bloodiest battlefield, with over 3,000 casualties during the 1814 Siege of Fort Erie. 

American forces occupied and reinforced the fort after capturing it, only to face intense bombardment and multiple attacks by the British. The fort was eventually abandoned and blown up by the retreating Americans, leaving it in ruins until restoration began in the 1930s.

Fast forward to 1866, and the ruins of Old Fort Erie were used as a base for the Fenians, an Irish-American group launching raids into Canada. Their bold moves helped stir support for Confederation, and just one year later, Canada officially became a nation in 1867.

Experience the Siege of Fort Erie in real life! Visit on August 9th/10th and take a journey through time with their live reenactment on the battlefield at Old Fort Erie! It’s entirely FREE to see!

What to Expect When You Visit 

Now when you visit Old Fort Erie, you’ll experience it as it was over 200 years ago, complete with costumed interpreters as you explore the fully restored fort. 

Guided tours are available hourly. You’ll first start with an introductory film that gives you some insight to the fort’s history.

Then you’ll walk around the walls of the fort before being brought into the main stone building where you’ll learn about the lives of British soldiers and explore inside the fort’s various rooms. See where the soldiers slept, the Officer’s quarters, commissary, surgery, and exhibition area.

Visit the kitchen and try a shortbread cookie made using a 19th century recipe and experience musket firings as you go through this historic stronghold before heading out to sweeping views of the Niagara River over to Buffalo.

Is It Haunted?

Old Fort Erie is widely considered one of the most haunted places in Ontario – and certainly in Niagara! Ghost stories swirl about shadowy figures, phantom gunfire, and mysterious footsteps echoing through the stone walls. 

During certain nights of the year, you can join a Ghost Tours at Old Fort Erie which is SO much fun. But be warned – staff have had spine-tingling experiences… some even quit on the spot! I won’t spoil the stories for you – you’ll have to go hear them for yourself if you’re brave enough!

We visited in early June and had the place almost to ourselves, it was like our very own VIP tour! If I had known the stories then, I definitely wouldn’t have spent so much time alone in those rooms… 

This is one of the best ways to experience the fort – we had a ton of fun at night!

How to Get There

Old Fort Erie is located at 350 Lakeshore Road, Fort Erie, Ontario, just across the Peace Bridge from Buffalo, NY. 

It’s an easy 25-minute drive from Niagara Falls, and plenty of free parking is available onsite.

Nearby Things to Do

• Explore Fort Erie’s waterfront trail for beautiful views of the Niagara River.
• Visit the Fort Erie Railway Museum to learn about the town’s transportation history.
• Crystal Beach is just a short drive away if you want to pair your history lesson with some sun and sand!
• If you’re visiting on a Saturday, try to book a guided tour of Point Abino Lighthouse. This is one of Niagara’s best hidden gems and only 8 tours are offered a year!
• Grab coffee and baked goods at the Manic Maker or Little Red Coffee & Catering, or a hearty, budget-friendly meal at The Barrel.

• Open Seasonally: Open daily from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm from mid-May (Victoria Day) to mid-October (Canadian Thanksgiving). 
• Accessibility: Some outdoor areas of the fort are accessible, but due to its historic entrances to the fort are not wheelchair or stroller friendly.
• Admission: $15 for adults ages 13+ and $9.50 for children ages 3-12.
  • You can also grab a Niagara Parks Heritage Trail Pass which includes admission to 6 historic properties (Old Fort Erie, Laura Secord Homestead, MacKenzie Printery, McFarland House, Fort George, and Brock’s Monument) for $36 adults/$23.50 children.   
  • If you have the Niagara Parks Adventure Pass Plus, access is included.
  • The Niagara Parks Annual Pass also covers unlimited admission (this is my FAVOURITE pass and the best way to experience the Falls if you’re a local or someone who visits multiple times throughout the year!)

Why You Should Visit Old Fort Erie

Old Fort Erie is a rare opportunity to walk the grounds where history was made – and maybe even feel a chill from the past! It’s a fun (and educational) way for kids especially, and haunted stories of the past and musket demonstrations will sure have them engaged! 

Tours of Old Fort Erie offers a chance to walk in the very footsteps of soldiers, settlers, and warriors who helped shape Canadian history.

From the boom of live musket demonstrations to tales of haunted happenings within the old stone walls, there’s something to draw everyone in. 

This was the site of some of the fiercest battles during the War of 1812, and many believe echoes of that turbulent past still linger.

Kids will love exploring the fort’s tunnels and ramparts, learning about life in the 1800s from costumed interpreters, and hearing stories of bravery, loss, and legends that continue to haunt the grounds. It’s the kind of history lesson that sticks with you – part field trip, part ghost story, and totally unforgettable.

Yes, it might be the most obvious stop, but nothing beats the thunderous roar and misty spray of Niagara Falls on a hot summer day. Take a walk along the Niagara Parkway for incredible views, or get up close and personal with the Falls aboard the iconic Niagara City Cruises boat tour.

There are so many things to see in Niagara Falls – regardless if you’re visiting on a budget or want to experience all the top attractions. Get the most bang for your buck by purchasing a Niagara Parks Pass which bundles attractions for a discounted rate (and includes transit around the Falls, too)!

Want to spend a few hours on Clifton Hill? An economical way to do it is by picking up the Clifton Hill Pass! This pass has 6 popular attractions on it – including the Niagara SkyWheel. We took my niece and she had a blast!

If you’re a frequent visitor to the Falls, I highly recommend picking up the Niagara Parks Annual Parking Pass. It pays for itself in as little as one day in Niagara Falls.

Cap the end of the day off with the Niagara Falls Fireworks show, which started Victoria Day weekend and runs through to Thanksgiving!

2. Sip and Savour in Wine Country

Summer is the perfect time to explore Niagara’s world-class wine scene. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned wine lover or someone who just enjoys the occasional glass, there’s something special about each of the Niagara wineries! 

Niagara-on-the-Lake is known for its picturesque wineries where charming estates and historic buildings set the scene for a leisurely tasting afternoon. 

It’s incredibly popular (understandably), so if you want something a little more off the beaten path, head to the Niagara Benchlands (in Lincoln, where I am)! You’ll find hidden gems tucked along the escarpment, many of them family run with scenic backdrops and a down-to-earth vibe. 

In the summer, many wineries pull out all the stops, with live music, events, wood-fired pizzas, picnics, and of course – patios! There are many of them offering a full-service restaurant – check out some of my favourite wineries with restaurants in Lincoln!

3. Pick-Your-Own Fruit

There’s something so nostalgic and satisfying about plucking sun-warmed fruit straight from the vine or branch, and Niagara’s fertile landscape makes it one of the best regions in Ontario for pick-your-own (PYO) adventures! 

Whether you’re after juicy strawberries, ripe cherries, or peaches, Niagara’s farms and orchards offer a chance to get your hands a little dirty and your baskets delightfully full.

Start the season off with strawberry picking in June—perfect for snacking, baking, or making fresh jam. As July rolls in, cherries, raspberries, and blueberries are prime for the picking. Niagara is also full of PYO peach farms!

Beyond the fruit itself, many farms offer family-friendly fun like tractor rides, on-site bakeries, scenic farm stands, and adorable photo ops among the orchards. It’s a great way to support local growers and family-run farm stands, enjoy the outdoors, and make memories with friends or little ones.

4. Hit the Beach

Yes, Niagara has beaches! They’re the perfect spot to unwind on a hot summer day. If you’re looking for soft sand, warm waves, and that classic beach-day atmosphere, head to Lakeside Park Beach in Port Dalhousie. 

It’s right near the historic carousel and waterfront pier, making it great for families, couples, or anyone who loves a little extra charm with their swim. 

Another summer favourite is Nickel Beach in Port Colborne. This sandy stretch is ideal for laying out your towel or going for a dip, and there’s the fun Splashtown Niagara inflatable water park here, too!

Prefer something a little quieter? Charles Daley Park offers peaceful views of Lake Ontario with grassy areas perfect for lounging. Long Beach Conservation Area in Wainfleet is another hidden gem, with a more rustic, laid-back feel. Pack a cooler, bring some beach games or a book, and just let the day take its sweet time.

5. Go on a Scenic Hike or Nature Walk

Niagara is home to some of Ontario’s most scenic and peaceful hiking trails that are perfect for those sunny summer days when you just want to get outside and breathe in some fresh air. 

The Bruce Trail runs right through the region, winding through shaded forest sections along the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, and opening up to sweeping views that’ll have you stopping for more than a few photos!

If you’re looking for something a little shorter (but just as rewarding), trails like Ball’s Falls Conservation Area (one of my favourite waterfall hikes in Niagara!) or Beamer Conservation Area are my regular trail picks. 

Just be sure to bring water and wear proper footwear!

6. Indulge at Local Farmers Markets

Berries, peaches, cherries, corn – you name it, Niagara grows it. The region transforms into a fresh food paradise during the summer, and there’s no better time to explore Niagara’s vibrant farmers markets.

Market stalls and roadside stands overflow with seasonal bounty, from juicy stone fruits to crisp veggies picked just hours earlier. You’ll find homemade jams, local honey, fresh-cut flowers, and buttery pies that taste just like grandma used to make..

Many markets also offer live music, handmade goods from local artisans, and showcase other goodies like cheese that make your visit feel like a mini summer festival – like the Grimsby Farmers Market every Thursday on Main Street! Grab a cold lemonade or iced coffee, enjoy a stroll through the stalls, and soak in that feel-good, sunshiney atmosphere.

7. Paddle or Cruise the Waterways

Kayak along the quiet shores of Port Colborne, paddleboard in Jordan Harbour, or even book yourself on a Whirlpool Jet Boat ride up the Niagara River (be prepared to get wet!). 

Prefer to stay dry? The canal trails are great for biking, jogging, or a breezy evening walk with unique views – especially when a massive cargo ship goes by!

8. Take in a Summer Festival

From craft beer and food truck festivals to music in the vineyards, summer in Niagara is packed with events. Check out the annual Peach Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake or Canal Days in Port Colborne for a lively mix of parades, live entertainment, and family-friendly fun. Check in with your favourite Niagara wineries to see what events are happening. There’s too many to list!

Many towns also host outdoor movie nights and summer concerts, so there’s always something happening when the sun goes down.

9. Visit a Historic Site or Museum

Take a break from the heat and step back in time. Laura Secord Homestead, Nelles Manor, and the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre are just a few places to go that offer fascinating glimpses into Niagara’s past.

Love unique finds? Book a guided tour of Point Abino Lighthouse in Fort Erie. Just 8 tours are offered a year for $6 ($3 for kids) and it gives you access to an otherwise off-limits National Historic Site of Canada! This is truly a hidden gem in the Niagara Region!

Navigating Niagara tip: Did you hear? Parks Canada announced that from June 20 – September 2, they are offering FREE admission (and 25% off overnight stays) at Parks Canada locations across the country! This will be a great time to check out Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake! This is a great spot for families – explore historic buildings, watch musket demonstrations, and discover what life was like during the War of 1812.

10. Cool Down with Local Ice Cream

A summer day in Niagara wouldn’t be complete without a cone (or two)!

Avondale Dairy Bar in Niagara-on-the-Lake has been serving up scoops since the 1950s and is a must-visit for its nostalgic charm and farm-side setting. Their banana splits and signature milkshakes are legendary – and yes, the lineups are worth it.

But the sweet fun doesn’t stop there. Across the region, you’ll find charming local spots dishing out handcrafted scoops, from quirky flavours to classic favourites. Look out for small-town parlours like Good Manners Ice Cream in Vineland, Merritville Big Scoop at Merritville Speedway in Thorold, or You Deserve It Cafe & Creamery in Fort Erie.

11.  Get Lost in a Sunflower Maze

When summer’s in full swing, there’s nothing quite like the golden glow of Howells Adventure Farm’s sunflower trails. These vibrant fields stretch as far as the eye can see, offering the perfect backdrop for dreamy summer photos. 

You can wander along the winding trails, take part in fun seasonal activities, and even pick your own sunflowers to take home. 

Navigating Niagara tip: Visit during golden hour for that perfect soft light, it’s a photographer’s dream! Don’t forget to wear something bright to pop against the sea of yellow.

13. Bike the Niagara Parkway

There’s no better way to soak up the beauty of Niagara in the summer than from the seat of a bike. The Niagara Parkway -famously called “the prettiest Sunday drive in the world” by Winston Churchill – is just as stunning on two wheels.

This scenic route stretches for over 50 kilometres, winding alongside the Niagara River from Fort Erie all the way to Niagara-on-the-Lake. You’ll pedal past lush vineyards, historic landmarks, quaint towns, and postcard-worthy views at every turn. The path is well-maintained and mostly flat, making it a great option for casual riders and families, too.

One of the best parts? The stops along the way! Pause for a scoop of ice cream in Chippewa, grab a patio lunch at Whirlpool Golf Course (you don’t have to be a member!), or swing by roadside fruit stands overflowing with peaches, cherries, and plums in peak season.

Many local wineries welcome cyclists for tastings (Riverview is a great option that’s right on the Niagara Parkway) – just be sure to pace yourself if you plan on sipping!

Navigating Niagara tip: You can also join a fun wine bike tour in Niagara-on-the-Lake which is a unique way to tour the area and its wineries! If you want to check out the historic charm of Niagara-on-the-Lake by bike, you can do a self-guided tour by renting a bike from any number of Zoom bike stands scattered across town, or directly from the Zoom Leisure Bike shop.

14.  See a Show in a Vineyard (or on Stage!)

Summer is peak theatre season! And one of the fun things to do during the summer in Niagara is see a show or concern at a vineyard.

Head to the Jackson-Triggs Amphitheatre for their outdoor summer performances! This beautiful venue hosts everything from classical concerts to contemporary music performances (paired of course with their wines!).

My favourite thing to do, however, is seeing a show at Shaw Festival every summer. Shaw Festival is one of Canada’s premier theatre festivals, showcasing a stunning lineup of plays – The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, along with Tons of Money are well worth seeing!

15. Stroll Through a Fairy Tale Garden

The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens are every bit as dreamy as they sound – a true summer sanctuary bursting with vibrant blooms, fragrant roses, and perfectly manicured pathways that invite you to slow down and soak in nature’s beauty. 

Spanning over 40 acres, these gardens are a feast for the senses with seasonal flowers and towering trees. One of the highlights is the Rose Garden, where hundreds of varieties create a kaleidoscope of colours and scents.

Another one of Niagara’s hidden gems is the stunning gardens at Pillar and Post, a free experience in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This historic inn’s grounds are lovingly cultivated with lush flower beds, quaint benches, and elegant landscaping that create a serene setting to enjoy a leisurely stroll or a quiet moment with a glass of wine from the Outpost.

16. Roam through Lavender

If summer had a scent, it would be lavender. Luckily, Niagara is home to several picturesque lavender farms where you can visit and stroll through fragrant purple fields and let the stress melt away.

One of the most popular spots is NEOB Lavender Boutique & Farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where rows of blooming lavender stretch out beneath wide blue skies. Visit in late June through mid-July for peak bloom, when the fields are at their most vibrant and the air is filled with that calming, unmistakable fragrance.

You can wander the fields, snap dreamy photos, and even pick your own bundle to take home. The onsite boutique sells everything from essential oils and body lotions to lavender-infused jams and teas—perfect souvenirs or gifts that literally smell like summer.

Some places, like Mingle Hill, offer guided farm tours on their Certified Organic farm, which provides a hands-on learning experience of their herbal and medicinal garden, pollinator zones, and peaceful trails. You’ll even get to meet their adorable resident cats!

Nestled between stunning vineyards and charming countryside, Niagara’s cherry orchards offer a delightful escape for fruit lovers and families alike. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, cherry picking is a must-try activity that promises fresh air, delicious fruit, and a memorable day out.

Cherries are usually ready in late June through to the end of July, depending on the variety. This gives you a few weeks and chances to get out to a few orchards to pick your own cherries this summer!

Here’s my guide to the top cherry picking spots in Niagara, where you can fill your baskets with the juiciest cherries and take part in this sweet summer adventure!

1. Parkway Orchards

Parkway Orchards in Niagara-on-the-Lake is a prime cherry picking location for those seeking outdoor fun and within close proximity to Niagara Falls and downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake! Be sure to check their website for cherry picking updates.

Depending on when you visit, you can also pick your own peaches here, too!

2. Mathias Farms

We LOVE coming to Mathias Farms in scenic Ridgeville, just a short drive from St. Catharines, Niagara Falls or Fonthill. They’re a family owned and operated fruit farm that offers pick your own as well as ready-picked fruit at their farm stand.

Mathias Farms offers other pick-your-own fruit if you visit during the same time as when cherries are ready. Be sure to grab some sour cherries while you’re here too – they are SO good!

3. Weiland’s Cherry Farm

Weiland Cherry Farm has been operating in the Fonthill area for over 50 years! If you’re visiting Niagara Falls, they’re just a quick 20 minute drive away. With over 3000 cherry trees on their property, there’s no shortage of cherries ready to pick.

They are a cash-only facility.

5. Cherry Avenue Farms

What better place to pick your own cherries than at a place named Cherry Avenue Farms? With over 200 years of family-run farming, this is the place to visit for a true farm experience!

Along with sweet cherries, you can also pick your own peaches, nectarines, apricots and pears depending on when you visit.

6. 20 Valley Harvest Farms

20 Valley Harvest Farms has over 1000 sweet and sour cherry trees on their 4th generation property in beautiful Jordan. They recommend checking their social media channels for updates prior to visiting.

Pair your experience with a visit to the Red Barn Farm Market or Upper Canada Cheese, just around the corner.

Good to know: There are no washroom facilities on site. Leashed dogs are welcome.

8. Duffin Farms

Located in Welland, Duffin Farms has hundreds of cherry trees with sweet and sour cherries galore! It’s not as well-known as other farms, which means you will have your pick of trees! 

You can also pick up freshly baked pies including peach, apple, and mixed fruit.

9. Metler Cherry Farm

Metler Cherry Farm is off the beaten path and much quieter than other farms, which makes it a great experience for families. You will find beautiful dark sweet cherries here.

Pair your cherry-picking experience with a visit to the Comfort Maple just down the street. It’s believed to the oldest sugar maple in all of Canada and estimated to be over 500 years old!

10. Hildreth Farms

Hildreth Farms in Beamsville has been serving the area for 4 generations across their 20 acres of land. It’s a great spot to come for sweet and sour cherries in the heart of Lincoln. 

Be sure to stop at their farm market (located at 5529 Greenlane Ave) for all kinds of produce, flowers, canned jellies and jams, baked goods and more!

One of the most well-known spots to pick your own peaches in Niagara is Cherry Avenue Farms in Vineland. 

With over 100 acres of orchards and 18,000 trees, you’ll not only find peaches here, but cherries too (I’m sure you could’ve guessed that by their name!), nectarines, plums, apricots and pears.

2. Devries Fruit Farm

Devries Fruit Farm has been operating their 200-acre farm since 1984! Located in the charming town of Fenwick, you can visit and pick your own peaches, including the much-loved Red Haven and Coralstar varieties.

Be sure to stop by their market for all sorts of produce, baked goods, and flowers!

3. Parkway Orchards

Located in picturesque Niagara-on-the-Lake, Parkway Orchards is the perfect place to stop by after a visit to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake! 

While there is an admission fee for those over the age of 4,Parkway Orchards is a one-stop-shop and offers baked goods, sandwiches, ice cream, and gifts. 

It’s a great spot for family-fun during peach season!

4. Smith Two Century Farms (Not available in 2025)

Smith Two Century Farms is a 6th generation farm that has been operating since 1788. This family-friendly farm offers PYO peaches, as well as cherries. You can also get pre-picked fruit from their market stand, too.

5. Duffin Farms

Along with PYO peaches, Duffin Farms also offers pick your own plums, apples, cherries, pears, and even pumpkins!

Since they don’t have a website or social media pages, I would recommend reaching out by phone at 905-892-5387 to confirm their picking schedule.

6. Duchyn Farms

Duchyn Farms is a short drive from downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake and offers a beautiful family-friendly environment for peach picking.

Your $20 entry fee includes entrance for 1 person (each additional person is $5) and a 7 litre basket of peaches, a shuttle to the orchard and back, access to washrooms, covered terrace, park areas, and more!

Booking online is recommended in advance.

Tucked away on the quiet shoreline of Lake Erie, just south of Fort Erie, sits a lighthouse like no other in Ontario – the Point Abino Lighthouse.

With its striking design, exclusive location, and fascinating maritime past, this hidden gem is one of Niagara’s most unique historic attractions. 

And the best part? You can actually tour it… but only on select days each summer!

If you’re looking for something truly unique to do in the Niagara Region during the summer, add a guided tour of Point Abino Lighthouse to your bucket list!

This lighthouse was in use for almost 8 decades when in 1995 was declared as “surplus” and all of its machinery was removed.

Unlike many lighthouses, which are usually designed for function rather than aesthetics, Point Abino Lighthouse is known for its elegant neoclassical architecture clean lines, and almost Grecian columns give it the look of a miniature temple by the water! 

It’s one of the only lighthouses of its kind in Canada, and its unusual beauty helped it earn National Historic Site status in 1998. It is only 1 of 13 designated lighthouses in Canada!

Why It’s Worth the Trip

Visiting the Point Abino Lighthouse is a rare experience – and one that I was so glad to finally do after knowing about the tours for a couple of years. It’s not every day you get to explore a National Historic Site that was, until recently, completely off-limits to the public.

It’s a tour you’ll be guaranteed to learn something new on, and offers an interesting look to the purpose of lighthouses and how they (and their keepers) did their job to protect passing ships from running ashore (or worse).

Tours are limited and spots fill up quickly, so it’s best to book in advance. A shuttle will take you through the private community to the lighthouse, where you’ll walk the grounds, take some incredible photos, set off the fog horn, and hear stories of shipwrecks, storms, lighthouse keepers, and resilience on the Great Lakes.

Point Abino Lighthouse is one of Niagara’s best-kept secrets. If you’ve been looking for a new kind of adventure close to home, this one checks all the boxes: rare access, fascinating history, and breathtaking lake views.

Plus for the price, it’s an absolute must!

Tigchelaar Berry Farms in Jordan Station offers pick-your-own strawberries. You can choose from a variety of sizes of containers to fill, which is great if you have small kids. Baskets available for a couple dollars, which you can keep and reuse next year! You can also bring your own (approved) container. Check ahead of time on Tigchelaar Berry Farm’s Facebook page for picking conditions and updates. You can also call (905) 658-2265 for a pre-recorded message on strawberry field updates.

2. Hildreth Farms (CLOSED FOR 2025)

Hildreth Farms offers pick-your-own strawberries along Greenlane Road in Beamsville. Visit their website and social media for picking updates. Be sure to stop at their awesome farm market afterwards to pick up some local produce, baked goods, local honey, and jams! Ps. Their baked pies are SO good!

3. Fenwick Berry Farm

Fenwick Berry Farm in Fenwick is a first-generation farm operating on 150 acres of land. Not only do they produce strawberries, but they also harvest raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, peaches, cherries and more, which you can buy at their market. They use a type of pest management that uses biological controls instead of pesticides. Check their Instagram page or call 905-892-8231 for pick-your-own strawberry updates.

4. Devries Fruit Farm

Devries Fruit Farm has been in the heart of Niagara since 1984 on their sprawling 200 acre farm. In addition to offering PYO strawberries, you can purchase fresh fruit and vegetables like blueberries, peaches, pears, plums, squash and corn from their awesome farm market. Call ahead at 905-892-8724 or check their social media pages for field updates.

5. Bry-Anne Farms

Bry-Anne Farms offers pick-your-own strawberries and raspberries in Fenwick. You can also find PYO field and roma tomatoes (which I think is the only one in Niagara that I know of)! Containers are available at the farm. It’s recommended to check their Facebook page or call ahead at 905-892-8999 to for picking updates.

6. Mathias Farms

Mathias Farms is a fantastic place to come for PYO fruit. Here you’ll find pick-your-own blackberries, raspberries, mulberries and red currants! You can also visit to pick your own cherries and apples. I recommend following their Instagram page for fruit picking updates. You can also swing by for pre-picked fruit and homemade jams.

7. Fire Creek Farms

Fire Creek Farms in Vineland offers an assortment of pick-your-own berries, including blueberries, raspberries, black raspberries, and elderberries. You can also stop by their market for pre-picked fruit, succulents, home goods and artisan products. Check their Facebook page for PYO berry updates!

8. Bluemin’ Acres

Bluemin’ Acres in Virgil is a family-owned blueberry farm offering 12 different varieties of pick-your-own blueberries in a peaceful setting. While there is no website, I recommend calling ahead at 905-468-8162  to verify their blueberry patch picking hours. Cash only.

9. Windwood Farms

Windwood Farms in Beamsville is a PYO fruit farm offering plums, pears, and apples nestled along the Niagara Escarpment. They are open later in the season and into fall. You can also find seasonal vegetables and pre-picked fruit, along with baked goods and apple cider at their market.
