1. Stroll and Shop on Queen Street 

Queen Street in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake turns into a magical scene during the winter. The charming boutique shops are dressed up and are perfect for finding unique gifts, artisan crafts, and delightful keepsakes. 

Warm up with a steaming cup of coffee or hot chocolate from one of the quaint cafes, like Balzac’s! If you’re looking for a snack to tide you over, head to Budapest Bake Shop for their amazing chimney cakes, Doughvine Bakehouse, or Nina Gelateria & Bake Shop, all found around Queen Street.

If you’re visiting with kids (or are just a kid at heart!) and if they’re anything like my niece, gelato and ice cream are considered a year-round treat! Cow’s Creamery and Il Gelato di Carlotta are her favourites.

December is my favourite time to visit, and if you happen to come then too, you’ll see the beautiful Christmas decorations adorning every corner—pure postcard perfection! Pick out the perfect Christmas ornament at Just Christmas (which is open year round!), stop by Maple Leaf Fudge for the best fudge I’ve ever eaten, or pop by Greaves to pick out tasty preserves. 

There are so many eclectic shops to stop into, so whether you’re looking for a gift for a loved one, or yourself (!) you’re bound to find something unique.

Navigating Niagara tip: Parking in Niagara-on-the-Lake is free during the month of December. Otherwise, parking close to Queen Street ranges from $5.00 – $5.50 an hour (and is enforced from 10 am – 8 pm).

2. Sip on Wine & Icewine at a Local Winery 

Winter is a fantastic time to visit Niagara-on-the-Lake’s world-renowned wineries. For me, one of the best parts is enjoying wineries without the crowds. Yes, you won’t be able to enjoy the outdoor experience as you would during the warmer months, but visiting on a winter day is peaceful and a great way to spend an hour or two. There have been many times we’ve sat and sampled a variety of wines, had some snacks, and just enjoyed the ambience on a lazy Sunday.

As snow blankets the vineyards, indulge in rich reds, crisp whites, and the region’s iconic icewine, made from grapes frozen on the vine. After all, winter is icewine season, so I recommend giving it a try! If you’ve had icewine in the past and didn’t like it, I suggest giving it another try. They’ve come a LONG way and is such an enjoyable treat.

Or, if you want to really experience a Canadian winter, check out Konzelmann’s Fireside Flight Tasting Experience, where you’ll be cozied up next to a private fire table and treated to a tasting flight with a sweet and savoury s’mores board! 

You can also book a Vineyard Dome Experience in a heated dome overlooking the vineyard while enjoying a tasting paired with locally-sourced charcuterie.

3. Glide Into Outdoor Skating Fun 

Bundle up and hit the ice at one of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s outdoor skating rinks! Head to Wayne Gretzky Estates, where you can skate while you’re surrounded by vineyards. Admission is $5/person and skate rentals are available for $10/pair. It’s an amazing way to spend an afternoon, especially if you pair your experience with a wine tasting and pizza on their heated outdoor Whiskey Bar Patio.

In the historic part of Niagara-on-the-Lake, head to Pillar and Post. They have a huge outdoor garden that’s free to visit called The Gardens. It offers a beautiful backdrop and it’s entirely free to skate there! Rentals are $5/pair. Cozy up next to a fire pit and warm up with hot drinks and snacks afterwards for a perfect winter day out!

4. Take a Winter Walk 

Crisp air, crunching snow, and scenic views make winter walks in NOTL an absolute joy. Stroll along the Niagara River Recreation Trail or explore the historic streets lined with heritage homes. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a light dusting of snow—perfect for photos!

You can also join a free walking tour (well worth doing!!) or go on a guided ghost walk; after all, Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of the most haunted places in Niagara!

For the more adventurous, the Bruce Trail begins at Queenston Heights. You can also hike the same path Laura Secord took (called the Laura Secord Legacy Trail) on her epic journey from her home in Queenston all the way to Thorold (in nothing but shoes resembling ballet slippers!!!).

I love the self-guided War of 1812 trail at Queenston Heights. There are numerous lookout points and interesting pieces of history to be found here and takes about 45 minutes to complete.

Navigating Niagara fun fact: The birthplace of Niagara Falls is located at Queenston Heights! It marks the original location of the Falls thousands of years ago. Around 12,000 years ago, after the last Ice Age, the Falls began forming near Queenston, where Lake Erie drained into the Niagara River. Over millennia, erosion caused the Falls to migrate upstream to their current location.

6. Enjoy World-Class Restaurants & Comfort Food 

Warm up with a hearty meal at one of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s amazing restaurants. For farm-to-table dining, Treadwell Cuisine is a standout for its locally sourced ingredients and seasonal dishes. I also love HobNob Restaurant at The Charles Hotel. Their dining room is gorgeous and there’s a cozy bar and lounge, all under the roof of a Victorian manor. Pair your meal with a local wine, and you’ve got yourself a winter feast to remember.

For comfort classics, the Olde Angel Inn and the Irish Harp Pub are local favourites. You’ll find shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, steak & onion pie, and hearty stews. What better way to warm up on a brisk winter day?

7. Indulge in Afternoon Tea 

Escape the winter chill with afternoon tea in Niagara-on-the-Lake! Indulge in warm scones, finger sandwiches, and decadent desserts while sipping on premium teas. The historic Prince of Wales Hotel and HobNob Restaurant offer a cozy, elegant setting that feels like stepping back in time. 

It’s a delightful way to unwind, stay warm, and treat yourself. Perfect for a winter date or a girls’ day out!

8. Catch a Holiday Show at the Shaw Festival 

The Shaw Festival Theatre brings holiday cheer with its seasonal performances in December. Catch A Christmas Carol (until December 22nd) as the perfect annual reminder of what Christmas spirit is all about. 

It’s a magical way to wrap up your visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake and a great way to get into the festive spirit.

9. Attend Winter Events 

Keep an eye on the calendar for special winter events in Niagara-on-the-Lake. From candlelit strolls to wine festivals, there’s always something happening. The Icewine Festival in January is a highlight, featuring tastings, culinary pairings, and live entertainment.

While winter is Niagara-on-the-Lake’s quiet season, there’s a ton going on!

Candlelight Stroll

Kick off the holidays with the magical tradition of the Candlelight Stroll! Grab a candle, wander through Old Town’s festive streets, and enjoy live carolers surrounded by sparkling decorations. Pure holiday charm!

1. Chase the Falls: Winter Views of Niagara Falls

Winter transforms Niagara Falls into a mesmerizing icy spectacle. The mist from the falls freezes on surrounding trees, creating stunning ice sculptures and a peaceful winter atmosphere. While the Falls themselves remain as majestic as ever, the crowds thin out in winter, giving you a quieter, more intimate experience.

Bundle up and take a walk along the pathways by the Falls—especially around Table Rock for a close-up view of the icy mist. You might even catch a beautiful rainbow if the sun hits the mist just right!

Visiting Niagara Falls in the winter is a great opportunity to experience the attractions the area has to offer. Niagara Parks Power Station offers the best bang for your buck when it comes to the history of the Falls, but there’s plenty of other indoor activities to enjoy to keep you warm! 

Navigating Niagara tip: Winter is one of the best times to secure lower hotel rates and book restaurants with ease. Plan a getaway at a hotel overlooking Niagara Falls or book a restaurant with amazing views!

2. Ice Skating at Indoor and Outdoor Rinks

Looking for a classic winter activity? Head to any number of skating rinks in Niagara (indoor or outdoor!), where you can glide across the ice with friends and family. 

Afterward, grab a hot chocolate or coffee from one of the nearby cafes and warm up while taking in the winter scenery. It’s a perfect afternoon outing for families, couples, or anyone looking for a fun way to embrace the cold.

3. Winter Wine Tours in Niagara’s Vineyards

The Niagara Region is renowned for its wineries, and while the summer vineyards are lovely, winter wine tours offer a whole new charm! Many of Niagara’s best wineries offer cozy indoor tastings where you can sample some of the best wines and ice wines.

While lots of people associate wineries with Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Niagara Benchlands has so much to offer. I recommend staying for a meal at any of the wineries in Lincoln with restaurants – you will be pleasantly surprised that you don’t have to drive further for an elevated winery experience.

Winter Special: Ice wine is a must-try in Niagara! Made from grapes that have frozen on the vine, this sweet and smooth wine is unique to colder climates. Many wineries also host winter events like fire pit experiences or wine dome lounges, so you can stay warm while you sip wine and take in the snowy views.

Navigating Niagara tip: There are a number of tours you can join, but we love doing self-guided tours so we can visit where we want! January offers a unique Ice Wine Tasting pass, where you can sample ice wine paired with food across 6 wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake. 

4. Winter Hikes: Snowy Trails and Views

You’ll find endless trails to explore in the Niagara Region, and many of these are absolutely beautiful in the winter! Head to Beamer Memorial Conservation Area for incredible views of the escarpment, or to Ball’s Falls Conservation Area to explore the historic Glen Elgin Village and to pretty waterfalls! Your options are endless – all you need to do is bundle up!

5. Explore Niagara-on-the-Lake: A Winter Storybook Village

If you’re looking for a picturesque winter escape, look no further than Niagara-on-the-Lake. This charming town is known for its small-town charm and is a delight to visit in the winter. Wander down Queen Street, where you’ll find quaint shops adorned with festive lights and decorations. Visit the Niagara Apothecary Museum for a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century medicine or pop into Exchange Brewery for bar bites, pizza, and local brews!

My favourite thing to do in NOTL is afternoon tea. There’s something so comforting about sipping tea from fine china and sampling tasty sweet and savoury treats on a chilly day. I would recommend heading to the Prince of Wales Hotel of HobNob at the Charles Hotel for a luxurious afternoon tea experience! 

If you’re looking for a really unique experience, the Greatest Winery Tour at Peller Estates Winery has you covered – it’s a wine tasting experience in Niagara’s only igloo-like lounge – the 10Below Icewine Lounge. Made from over 13,500 kg of ice and kept at -10º, you’ll sample Niagara’s liquid gold (icewine)!

6. Sledding and Tobogganing

Sledding is the ultimate childhood winter adventure—and it’s just as magical for adults! There’s nothing like the thrill of zooming down a snowy hill, the sound of laughter echoing through the crisp winter air. It’s the perfect way to get everyone moving (and maybe even tire out the kids ) while creating family memories.

7. Visit Niagara’s Museums

Explore the Niagara region’s museums this winter and learn what shaped our area into what it is today! The Niagara Falls History Museum dives into the city’s past – far beyond just the waterfalls! It features artifacts from the War of 1812 and local heritage. 

At the Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre in Jordan Village, uncover exhibits celebrating regional art and history. The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre showcases the fascinating story of the canal system and its impact on the area. Places like these are perfect for a day you want to get out of the house for an hour or two. You’d be surprised how much there is to learn about the region!

9. Afternoon Tea Rooms

Warm up this winter with a visit to the Niagara Region’s charming afternoon tea rooms! Escape the cold and indulge in a cozy tea experience at the Prince of Wales Hotel. This is my favourite place to go for an upscale experience. Or, visit hidden gems like the Fox & Hummingbird in Welland or Tay’s Treats in Vineland!

There’s something so uplifting about settling down over a pot of tea, good conversation, and sweet and savoury treats when it’s chilly outside. It’s the perfect way to spend a snowy January or February day.

10. Winter Festivals and Events

Niagara is home to several winter festivals that make the season extra special. A local favorite is the Winter Festival of Lights, where the region is illuminated with over three million lights in stunning displays along the Niagara Parkway. This magical festival runs from November through January and is a sight you won’t want to miss.

Bundle up and take a stroll! There is lots to see between Table Rock House and Clifton Hill. Warm up at any number of spots along the Hot Chocolate Trail (including adult versions!!)

Don’t miss out on the Icewine Festival events in January! From cozying up in the Icewine Village in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake to tasting the best from the region during the Icewine Discovery Pass, to even a full-blown Cool as Ice Gala at the Niagara Parks Power Station, icewine is something to be celebrated here!

Embrace the Magic of Niagara in Winter

Niagara in winter is a hidden gem that offers so much more than just the Falls. Whether you’re strolling through quaint towns, exploring scenic trails, or sipping wine, the region is brimming with unique experiences that will make your winter visit unforgettable.

1. Beamer Memorial Conservation Area

Perched atop the Niagara Escarpment, Beamer Memorial Conservation Area offers the best views (in my opinion) of any other vantage point along the escarpment. You’ll find numerous vantage points and lookout spots with views of snow-covered trees, Lake Ontario, and Toronto. It’s the perfect place for a peaceful stroll after snowfall.

If you’re up for an adventure, you can take the stairs down to Forty Mile Creek – but watch your footing! The stairs don’t have a railing and they’re narrow – proving to be tricky after snowy and icy conditions. 

If it’s been a lot of snow and ice and if it’s started to thaw, you can hear the creek roaring from the top of the escarpment. From below, you can follow the worn Bruce Trail path, but there are a lot of little side trails that will lead you to the creek.

Your other option to see the Forty Mile Creek ravine is to access Beamer from the Bruce Trail access at the bottom of Grimsby Mountain Road. Park at the Food Basics plaza, cross the street and take a left to follow the sidewalk down Elm to Mountain Street (slightly shorter) or turn right until you get to Gibson St and continue until you reach the Bruce Trail access.

2. Kinsmen Park

This hidden gem is a winter wonderland, with wooded trails winding through snow-blanketed trees. It’s a quiet spot and one of my favourite places to go. Kinsmen Park offers one of those choose-your-own-adventure hikes that’s ideal for a short, refreshing jaunt – or a longer one, depending on the mood you’re in.

Winter is beautiful here because you may stumble across tiny frozen creeks, snow-covered vineyards, viewpoints of Lake Ontario and Toronto, and bridges that look like they’ve popped out of a winter fairytale.

The Bruce Trail runs through Kinsmen Park but there are a lot of little side trails to take as well. No two hikes are alike. Head east towards Cave Springs Conservation Area or head West towards Mountainview Conservation Area and head past wineries. If there’s been a lot of snowfall, just be mindful of your footing if you decide to take the trail right along the edge of the escarpment. There are a lot of boulders with gaps between them and you can’t see them after heavy snow.

There is an ample-sized parking lot from Frost Rd, and there is a smaller parking area at the base of the escarpment down Hixon St. You’ll also find an off-leash dog park here, too.

3. Balls Falls Conservation Area

Ball’s Falls Conservation Area is my favourite place to hike during the winter and it’s one of my favourite waterfall hikes! It’s magical with a layer of snow, and when the two waterfalls are flowing!

The trail to the Upper Falls from the conservation centre is a peaceful, forested path. You’ll hear the creek rushing below as you go, and the viewpoints for the Upper Falls are amazing. 

Once you’re back in the historic village of Glen Elgin, you can check out the Lower Falls from a picture-perfect viewing spot. The amount of water pouring over the edge is seriously impressive. If our winter is really cold, it freezes and makes for a beautiful photo. 

Parking is located at the conservation centre up top. Parking is $9/vehicle during the off-season, or if you’re a local library member at participating libraries, you can rent a NaturePlus Pass for 7 days!

You can also park on the shoulder of Glen Rd (there is enough parking for 8-10 cars) and hike in the back way to Ball’s Falls via the Twenty Valley Trail. The trail is a bit steep and rocky and can be tricky after heavy snow, so if you do choose to use this trail, use extra caution and the appropriate gear!

Ball’s Falls Historical Loop distance: 2.1 km
Twenty Valley Trail distance: 4 km roundtrip

4. Louth Conservation Area

Louth Conservation Area is a little piece of magic tucked just down the road from Sue-Ann Staff Winery. I still remember my first visit—wandering up the Sixteen Mile Creek bed and catching my breath when I saw the hidden falls. In the winter, the whole place transforms into something straight out of a storybook.

The Bruce Trail also weaves through Louth, so don’t miss the chance to explore beyond the main path and take in this gorgeous waterfall from different angles.

Heads up, though—Louth’s parking lot is tiny (room for about 6-8 cars), and plenty of folks end up parking along the shoulder of the road. The main side trail is about a 45-minute loop, but if you’re anything like me, stopping to take it all in might make it a longer adventure!

5. Rockway Conservation Area

Rockway Conservation Area offers a magical mix of escarpment views and frozen waterfalls during the winter. The hiking trails are surrounded by towering trees which are almost ethereal with a dusting of snow! There is a bit of elevation change and some tricky footing spots, but it is easily one of the prettiest winter hiking trails in Niagara. 

Just 5 minutes down the street from Louth Conservation Area, this used to be one of the more heavily trafficked areas in the area until parking was implemented – but it’s still absolutely worth visiting. 

The star of the show at Rockway Conservation Area is definitely Rockway Falls, tumbling an impressive 60 feet over the edge. But that’s not all—there are plenty of other waterfalls to spot, all connected by a series of scenic rapids.

This place isn’t just about the views, though! Rockway has a cool bit of history too. Back in the late 1700s, a salt spring here was discovered, known for having the best quality and quantity of salt in Ontario. 

If you’re feeling up for an adventure and a longer hike, you can link up with the Bruce Trail and head east towards Louth (the elevation changes are steep, so if it’s icy, be cautious!) or west towards Short Hills Provincial Park.

Parking is $9/vehicle or free with a NaturePlus Pass (check with your local Niagara library!).

6. Short Hills Provincial Park

Short Hills Provincial Park is a gem for hiking, especially in the winter! With 8 awesome trails to explore, plus a special 9th trail designed for accessibility, there’s something for everyone. It’s the largest park in the area, covering over 1,600 acres, with 3 different access points—and the best part? It’s totally free to visit! 

The trails are well-marked, making them perfect for a snowy adventure. They range from 4.5 km to 11.5 km, with varying levels of difficulty. It’s also a haven for wildlife, so you might spot deer and birds of prey along the way.

Navigating Niagara Fact: Short Hills got its name from the glacial erosion that happened over 12,000 years ago! Those glaciers carved out the escarpment, leaving behind the park’s signature “short hills.”

Terrace Creek Trail

A scenic classic. Don’t miss Terrace Creek Falls, especially in the winter when it freezes over! It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful moment and some stunning photos.

From the parking lot, head south until you hit the Bruce Trail, then go east. Keep an eye out for Terrace Creek Trail, marked as #6. Heads up—the main trail leading there can get super icy, so crampons are definitely a good idea.

Location: Parking Lot C for the Short Hills Provincial Park – Wiley Road, Thorold, On.

Paleozoic Trail

Looking for an easy trail that’s perfect for kids and comes with a waterfall? The Paleozoic Trail is a great pick. It’s designed with beginner hikers and those with mobility challenges in mind. The trail has a smooth, hard-packed gravel surface, making it wheelchair and stroller-friendly (on clear days without snow or ice). Plus, there are barrier-free benches where you can relax and soak in the views.

Don’t miss the viewing platform for Swayze Falls—it’s especially stunning in the winter!

Location: Parking Lot B for the Short Hills Provincial Park – 193 Roland Rd, Ridgeville

Swayze Falls Trail 

If you’re up for a longer, more challenging adventure, the Swayze Falls Loop is a great choice. This trail takes you through stunning wooded areas and leads you to views of Swayze Falls.

Distance: 6.6 km
Location: Parking Lot B for the Short Hills Provincial Park – 193 Roland Rd, Ridgeville

7. St. John’s Conservation Area

St. John’s Conservation Area is perfect for a quick hike and absolutely gorgeous! With four trails winding through a stunning old-growth forest (some trees are over 150 years old!), it’s a favourite spot for families. Even the drive to the parking lot is so scenic.

You’ll find boardwalks crossing marshes, a peaceful trout pond, and a paved, accessible path around it—ideal for strollers and wheelchairs.

While most of the trails are nice and easy, there are a couple of steeper spots to keep things interesting. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation and is great for families.

Location: 3101 Barron Rd, Fonthill

Note: There is a parking paystation upon entry but a spokesperson for the NPCA has stated it’s to restrict access to the park between 8:00 pm – 6:00 am due to vandalism. Entry here is free.

Winter Hiking Tips

• Stay Warm: Dress in layers and don’t forget your hat, gloves, and scarf.
• Safety First: Wear sturdy boots with good traction or bring microspikes/crampons for icy sections (and hiking poles for added stability)
• Pack Snacks: A thermos of hot tea/warm water and some trail mix are easy to carry.
• Plan Ahead: Check trail conditions and weather forecasts before heading out.

Does Niagara Falls Ever Completely Freeze Over?

Though parts of Niagara Falls freeze over in winter, don’t expect to see the entire waterfall solidly frozen! The last time the Falls fully froze was way back in 1848, due to an extreme cold snap and a buildup of ice. Back then, it became quite the attraction, with people actually walking along the frozen riverbed at the base of the Falls!

Things to do in Niagara Falls during Winter

Aside from visiting to see the Falls themselves, there are a ton of other things to do in Niagara Falls in the winter!  Many of these activities are indoors but there are a few fantastic outdoor activities as well.

If you were planning to hop on the Hornblower/Maid of the Mist cruise or Whirlpool Jet Boat tours, visit the White Water Walk or Whirlpool Aero Car, these attractions are closed for the winter.

1. Niagara Parks Power Station

The Niagara Parks Power Station is one of those attractions I really encourage people to do because it gives you the best value for your money! 

Step into a captivating journey that takes you through more than a century of history, revealing how the mighty energy of Niagara Falls has been transformed into hydroelectric power.

Explore the fascinating intricacies of this incredible facility, from the smallest components to the colossal turbines, as you uncover intriguing and unique tales of the Niagara Parks Power Station through engaging exhibits, artifacts, and unique storytelling.

The Power Station is one of the best things to do in Niagara Falls not only during the winter, but year-round!

The Tunnel at the Niagara Power Station

When you explore the Niagara Parks Power Station, don’t miss the chance to glide down 180 feet in a glass-panel elevator to the Tunnel —it’s all part of your admission! 

After your descent, you’ll venture through the remarkable 2,200-foot Tailrace tunnel, which once served as an outlet for the water harnessed for hydropower. Discover the incredible story of how this tunnel was excavated back in 1901 using nothing but lanterns, explosives, pickaxes, and shovels.

At the end of the tunnel, you’ll step onto an observation platform where the tunnel flows into the Niagara River. Get ready for breathtaking views of Niagara Falls from this spectacular vantage point!

Good to know: The Tunnel at the Niagara Parks Power Station is open year-round, but access to the tunnel may be limited on days of inclement weather in the winter. Wear appropriate footwear because it is a bit of a walk!

Power Station at Night

Looking for something to do at night during the winter? Explore the Power Station after hours! 

Stroll through the beautifully lit generator hall and wander the 2,200-foot-long underground Tunnel, where captivating LED displays, archival images, and immersive sound effects reveal the history of Niagara’s power.

After your exploration, enjoy breathtaking views of the illuminated Horseshoe Falls from an observation platform at the end of the Tunnel.

Enjoy Currents, the spectacular sound and light show in the generator hall. The show runs continuously, allowing you to choose when to watch and when to experience new lighting installations throughout the venue. We really enjoyed this show and it is a highlight for us!

2. Journey Behind the Falls

Did you know you can stroll behind Niagara Falls even in winter? Journey Behind the Falls is a unique attraction that’s open all year round and gets you the closest you can get to the Falls. You’ll make your way down 125 feet into tunnels that guide you to two viewing portals right behind the Canadian Falls.

While the lower observation deck is closed due to icy conditions in winter, you can still enjoy the unique views from those two portals. Plus, since part of the attraction is closed for the season, you get to enjoy reduced rates!

3. Skylon Tower

The Skylon Tower in Niagara Falls is an incredible spot to take in breathtaking views from above, especially in the winter months. Standing at 764 feet (233 metres), this tower offers both indoor and outdoor observation areas.

Make sure to snap some photos outside, but don’t forget to dress warm! The winds can be quite fierce up there, and the winter chill can really nip at you, but the panoramic views are more than worth it!

Visiting the Skylon Tower is a fantastic opportunity to capture stunning winter scenes of Niagara Falls. Consider booking your tickets in advance to save some cash, or if you’re thinking of dining there, your admission to the observation deck is included! Enjoy a meal in the Revolving Dining Room for amazing views of the Falls, Clifton Hill, and even Niagara Falls, New York. 

If you come for dinner during the Winter Festival of Lights, you’ll be treated to a dazzling display from above, along with the illuminated Falls. Don’t miss the chance to see the fireworks at 8:00 pm on special nights during the festival!

5. Clifton Hill

Exploring Niagara Falls in the winter comes with some advantages—like experiencing all the excitement of Clifton Hill without the usual crowds! From bowling alleys to haunted houses, funhouses, museums, and dining options, Clifton Hill is packed with year-round entertainment.

To save a bit on your adventures, consider grabbing the Clifton Hill Fun Pass. This handy pass includes access to six activities, including:

• Movieland Wax Museum  
• Wizards Golf (indoor—Dinosaur Adventure Golf is available in warmer weather!)

You could easily spend an entire afternoon diving into attractions there, and the pass will help save some money because admissions can add up quickly.

Experience the winter magic of Niagara by hopping on the Niagara Skywheel! With shorter wait times and warm, cozy cabins, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Falls like never before. And if you plan your visit during the Winter Festival of Lights, you might just be treated to a stunning fireworks display at 8:00 pm from the top of the Skywheel!

8. Zipline to the Falls

Ready for an exciting winter adventure? How about ziplining? You can enjoy ziplining to the Falls with this thrilling activity all year round with WildPlay Niagara. With shorter wait times and stunning views of the frosty landscape, ziplining offers a unique way to experience the beauty of Niagara Falls in winter. It’s an adventure you won’t want to miss!

10. Helicopter Ride

If you want to enjoy a breathtaking view of Niagara Falls this winter, check out Niagara Helicopters’ Winter Nights and Lights Experience, available during the Winter Festival of Lights!

These unique flights run daily from sunset until 8:00 pm throughout the festival. Don’t miss your chance to be part of the first-ever sunset helicopter tour over Niagara Falls—it’s the perfect way to experience the enchanting winter landscape and the twinkling lights of the festival from the sky!

11. Fallsview Casino/Casino Niagara

Niagara Falls is home to two casinos that are a major attraction in the area. Fallsview Casino and Casino Niagara are packed with endless gaming excitement. Whether you’re drawn to the thrill of the slot machines or prefer the strategy of table games, these casinos offer an indoor escape from the winter chill. 

In addition to gaming, you can explore a variety of shops and enjoy dining options right within both casinos, keeping you warm and dry. Plus, they’re linked to several nearby hotels, so on those super cold days, you might not even need to venture outside!

Special events in Niagara Falls during the winter

While there are a number of amazing things to do in the area during the winter, there are also some special events happening during the winter.  

1. Winter Festival of Lights

The Winter Festival of Lights is a must-see during the holiday season. This enchanting showcase stretches 8 km along the Niagara Parkway, through Queen Victoria Park, and Dufferin Islands. With more than 3 million twinkling lights and 75 stunning displays, Niagara Falls transforms into a nighttime wonderland.

3. Floral Showhouse Annual Poinsettia Show

Experience the magic of winter at the Annual Poinsettia Show, where the Floral Showhouse is transformed into a stunning holiday wonderland!

Spanning five weeks throughout the Christmas season, this spectacular event showcases more than 1,400 vibrant poinsettias along with 1,000 carefully curated display plants, all cultivated specifically for this occasion. Coupled with enchanting outdoor lighting displays, this is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Niagara Falls during the winter!

4. Niagara Falls Fireworks

The fireworks in Niagara Falls during the Winter Festival of Lights are scheduled for 26 nights this season!

November: 16th, 22nd-23rd, 29th-30th at 8:00pm
December: 6th-7th, 13th-14th, 20th-21st, 27th-31st at 8:00pm
December 31st  (New Year’s Eve) at midnight
January: 1st-5th at 8:00pm

You can enjoy the fireworks from any number of locations, including an array of hotels.

My favourite spot to watch the fireworks is from the promenade across from Queen Victoria Park. The views are the closest and are the most unobstructed, and in my opinion, is the best spot to watch the fireworks in Niagara Falls.

5. Hot Chocolate Trail

One of the best parts about the Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls is the Hot Chocolate Trail. This self-guided tour leads you to delicious stops around the Falls.

Taste chocolate concoctions created by chefs, mixologists, chocolatiers, and bakers across the Falls. There are 25 stops to pick from and 36 unique flavours to sip and savour – including alcoholic options!

What’s better than strolling around the Niagara Parkway at night, with twinkling lights surrounding you and a warm cup of hot chocolate in your hands?

6. Niagara Icewine Festival

If you’re seeking a winter adventure in Niagara Falls this January, look no further than the Niagara Icewine Festival! This event showcases one of the region’s biggest claims to fame: its renowned wineries. 

January is truly enchanting for Icewine production, allowing you to savour the area’s famous “liquid gold” – a dessert wine celebrated for its rich sweetness and velvety texture. 

During the festival, you’ll have the chance to enjoy six unforgettable tasting experiences at some of Niagara’s finest wineries, spread over three weekends with the Icewine Discovery Pass in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to indulge in the flavours of winter!

If you’re hoping to witness the Falls adorned with ice, keep in mind that you might be out of luck this month. It takes a substantial stretch of cold weather to form those stunning ice pillars!

What to wear on a winter visit to Niagara Falls

If you’re planning a winter visit to Niagara Falls, it’s essential to bundle up! Start with a weather-resistant jacket that can handle the colder temps — you’ll be grateful for it! 

In winter, temperatures usually hover between 2°C and -8°C (36°F – 17°F) , with the windchill often making it feel even colder. Expect a mix of windy, snowy, and brisk weather, plus a misty chill if you’re near the Falls.

Be sure to bring a warm hat, gloves, and a scarf to guard against the frosty mist and biting wind, which can chill you to the core. Being uncomfortably cold can definitely take the fun out of sightseeing!

If you’re thinking of doing some sightseeing on foot, sturdy boots with warm socks are a must, along with layered clothing under your coat. Think a comfy sweater (with a light layer underneath, just in case) and insulated pants to stay nice and toasty.

Staying in Niagara Falls in the winter is much cheaper than any other time of the year. For this reason, it’s worth choosing a hotel with a Fallsview room. It’s a great way to catch the Falls illumination at night, and catch the sunrise over the Falls in the morning!

Planning a trip to Niagara Falls from Toronto? Luckily, there are plenty of simple ways to make the journey!
