A Fort Built for War

Fort George was originally constructed between 1796 and 1799 by the British Army to guard the Niagara River and protect Upper Canada from potential American attacks. Its location directly across from Fort Niagara in New York made it a prime military post. That also meant it was a prime target.

Fort George played a key role during the War of 1812, serving as the headquarters for the British Army along the Niagara frontier. It was the site of several major battles – the most known being the Battle of Fort George in 1813 – and even briefly fell under American control before being retaken by British forces later that year.

It’s been fully restored to reflect what it would have looked like in the early 1800s. We spent almost 3 hours here but could’ve easily stayed longer!

Rebuilt and Brought Back to Life

The original fort was largely destroyed during the conflict, but thanks to meticulous reconstruction work in the late 1930s (part of a Depression-era public works project), Fort George now stands as a faithful recreation of what it would have looked like in the early 1800s.

And it’s not just a collection of old buildings – this is living history at its best! You’ll find re-enactors cooking over open fires, firing muskets, and sharing stories from the past.

It’s a fantastic spot to bring kids (and kids at heart!) and it was so nice to see families and kids roaming the grounds and being intrigued by all that’s going on.

The programming is excellent and you’ll find numerous demonstrations throughout the day, from a flag-raising ceremony, musket firing, history talks, Fife and Drum Corps music, and on special events throughout the year.

Fort George Today: Why It’s Worth the Trip

Fort George is part of Parks Canada and was designated a National Historic Site in 1921. It’s incredibly well-preserved and maintained and all the staff are so friendly and knowledgeable.

I think it’s one of the best historic attractions in the region. I recommend setting aside a few hours for this activity if you’re planning to visit Niagara-on-the-Lake.

It’s also a perfect pairing with other Niagara-on-the-Lake activities: enjoy a morning at the fort, then grab lunch in town, see a play at Shaw Festival, visit local wineries, or take a riverside stroll along the Niagara Parkway. There are a ton of free things to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake too!

When most people hear the name Laura Secord, they think of the chocolates. But tucked away in the picturesque village of Queenston, the Laura Secord Homestead offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of Canada’s most celebrated heroines. 

More than just a historic house, this lovingly restored home tells the story of bravery, perseverance, and the early days of a nation shaped by conflict.

Who Was Laura Secord?

Laura Secord is a name that resonates with many Canadians, often linked to tales of heroism during the War of 1812. But beyond the famous chocolate brand that bears her name lies the remarkable story of a woman who defied the odds to make history.

In June of 1813, Americans barged their way into her home which she shared with her husband, James. They ordered her to feed them dinner and spoke freely about their plans to try and defeat the British Army.

After overhearing American officers discussing a planned surprise attack on British troops (and not expecting her to know any different and assuming she would have no one to tell), Laura embarked on a grueling 32 kilometre trek through enemy territory, woods, and swamps to warn Lieutenant James FitzGibbon. 

Laura was 37 years old and had 5 children at the time, and this unfathomable journey took her 18 hours to do. She set off in her regular clothes to not draw any attention to herself, and struggled through deep brush and exhaution before coming face-to-face with a Chief of an Iroquois tribe. This tribe understood her pleas, and assisted her to her final destination.

It was because of Laura Secord’s bravery that the British forces, along with hundreds of First Nations warriors, made a surprise attack on the Americans before they could carry out their surprise attack, and defeated the Americans at the Battle of Beaver Dams and prevented any further American forces from coming into Canada.

Guides dressed in early 19th-century attire bring the home to life with stories of Laura, her family, and the War of 1812 as you tour through the rooms decorated with period furniture and artifacts. It gives you a real sense of what life was like over 200 years ago.

It was later donated to the Niagara Parks Commission and remains one of the best-preserved historic homes in the region, along with another one of my favourites, McFarland House (a fantastic spot for afternoon tea, too)!

Then, in 1860, the Prince of Wales (who would later become King Edward VII) visited Niagara Falls. He heard Laura’s story and was so impressed that he awarded her £100 for her bravery and her role in helping defeat the American forces.

That £100 might not sound like much today—about $170 Canadian—but back in 1865, it would’ve been worth around $3,676! A decent chunk of change for the time… though still kind of underwhelming considering what she did.

Laura lived a long life, passing away at 93. She’s buried in Drummond Hill Cemetery in Niagara Falls (considered to be one of the most haunted places in Niagara), right beside her husband James.

Follow in the Footsteps of Laura Secord!

Did you know you can follow the same 32 km journey Laura took? It’s called the Laura Secord Legacy trail which leads you from the Laura Secord Homestead and ends at Decew House Heritage Park. 

There’s an amazing step by step trail guide found on the Friends of Laura Secord site. I’ve done bits of this trail (as some of it connects with the Bruce Trail) and it’s incredible that she managed to do this trek in nothing more than what looks like ballet flats!

For anyone interested in Canada’s roots, military history, or simply looking to explore something unique, Old Fort Erie offers an experience that’s both moving and unforgettable.

A Brief History of Old Fort Erie 

Originally built by the British in 1764 after the Seven Years’ War, this was the first fort built in what would become Ontario. It was originally constructed as a wooden structure until later being rebuilt in the early 1800s. 

For years, it played a key role as a busy supply depot and port for British soldiers, Loyalist Rangers, and Six Nations Warriors, with ships loaded up with goods, troops, and passengers heading off to the Upper Great Lakes.

But its real claim to fame came during the War of 1812. Old Fort Erie was the site of Canada’s bloodiest battlefield, with over 3,000 casualties during the 1814 Siege of Fort Erie. 

American forces occupied and reinforced the fort after capturing it, only to face intense bombardment and multiple attacks by the British. The fort was eventually abandoned and blown up by the retreating Americans, leaving it in ruins until restoration began in the 1930s.

Fast forward to 1866, and the ruins of Old Fort Erie were used as a base for the Fenians, an Irish-American group launching raids into Canada. Their bold moves helped stir support for Confederation, and just one year later, Canada officially became a nation in 1867.

Experience the Siege of Fort Erie in real life! Visit on August 9th/10th and take a journey through time with their live reenactment on the battlefield at Old Fort Erie! It’s entirely FREE to see!

What to Expect When You Visit 

Now when you visit Old Fort Erie, you’ll experience it as it was over 200 years ago, complete with costumed interpreters as you explore the fully restored fort. 

Guided tours are available hourly. You’ll first start with an introductory film that gives you some insight to the fort’s history.

Then you’ll walk around the walls of the fort before being brought into the main stone building where you’ll learn about the lives of British soldiers and explore inside the fort’s various rooms. See where the soldiers slept, the Officer’s quarters, commissary, surgery, and exhibition area.

Visit the kitchen and try a shortbread cookie made using a 19th century recipe and experience musket firings as you go through this historic stronghold before heading out to sweeping views of the Niagara River over to Buffalo.

Is It Haunted?

Old Fort Erie is widely considered one of the most haunted places in Ontario – and certainly in Niagara! Ghost stories swirl about shadowy figures, phantom gunfire, and mysterious footsteps echoing through the stone walls. 

During certain nights of the year, you can join a Ghost Tours at Old Fort Erie which is SO much fun. But be warned – staff have had spine-tingling experiences… some even quit on the spot! I won’t spoil the stories for you – you’ll have to go hear them for yourself if you’re brave enough!

We visited in early June and had the place almost to ourselves, it was like our very own VIP tour! If I had known the stories then, I definitely wouldn’t have spent so much time alone in those rooms… 

This is one of the best ways to experience the fort – we had a ton of fun at night!

How to Get There

Old Fort Erie is located at 350 Lakeshore Road, Fort Erie, Ontario, just across the Peace Bridge from Buffalo, NY. 

It’s an easy 25-minute drive from Niagara Falls, and plenty of free parking is available onsite.

Nearby Things to Do

• Explore Fort Erie’s waterfront trail for beautiful views of the Niagara River.
• Visit the Fort Erie Railway Museum to learn about the town’s transportation history.
• Crystal Beach is just a short drive away if you want to pair your history lesson with some sun and sand!
• If you’re visiting on a Saturday, try to book a guided tour of Point Abino Lighthouse. This is one of Niagara’s best hidden gems and only 8 tours are offered a year!
• Grab coffee and baked goods at the Manic Maker or Little Red Coffee & Catering, or a hearty, budget-friendly meal at The Barrel.

Plan Your Visit

• Open Seasonally: Open daily from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm from mid-May (Victoria Day) to mid-October (Canadian Thanksgiving). 
• Accessibility: Some outdoor areas of the fort are accessible, but due to its historic entrances to the fort are not wheelchair or stroller friendly.
• Admission: $15 for adults ages 13+ and $9.50 for children ages 3-12.
  • You can also grab a Niagara Parks Heritage Trail Pass which includes admission to 6 historic properties (Old Fort Erie, Laura Secord Homestead, MacKenzie Printery, McFarland House, Fort George, and Brock’s Monument) for $36 adults/$23.50 children.

  • The Niagara Parks Annual Pass also covers unlimited admission (this is my FAVOURITE pass and the best way to experience the Falls if you’re a local or someone who visits multiple times throughout the year!)

Why You Should Visit Old Fort Erie

Old Fort Erie is a rare opportunity to walk the grounds where history was made – and maybe even feel a chill from the past! It’s a fun (and educational) way for kids especially, and haunted stories of the past and musket demonstrations will sure have them engaged! 

Tours of Old Fort Erie offers a chance to walk in the very footsteps of soldiers, settlers, and warriors who helped shape Canadian history.

From the boom of live musket demonstrations to tales of haunted happenings within the old stone walls, there’s something to draw everyone in. 

This was the site of some of the fiercest battles during the War of 1812, and many believe echoes of that turbulent past still linger.

Kids will love exploring the fort’s tunnels and ramparts, learning about life in the 1800s from costumed interpreters, and hearing stories of bravery, loss, and legends that continue to haunt the grounds. It’s the kind of history lesson that sticks with you – part field trip, part ghost story, and totally unforgettable.

I always love walking through the trees and hearing the sound of rushing water before I can see it – and these hikes are just as magical during the winter, too.  

Put on your hiking boots, grab your camera, and let’s find the amazing beauty that Niagara has to offer! 

1. Beamer Memorial Conservation Area

Beamer Memorial Conservation Area is a beautiful spot to see some amazing views of the Niagara Escarpment. It’s one of my favourite places to see the sunrise in the region, and one of the best spots to see the fall colours! 

While the main hiking trail doesn’t lead to a waterfall, you have two options to get to Beamer Falls – one, is by hiking down the set of stairs from the top loop of the hiking trail, and following up the creek. 

This may be tricky if there is a lot of flow in Forty Creek. You can also drive to the other side of Forty Creek and park at the side of the road and take a short hike down to the waterfall.

2. Ball’s Falls Conservation Area

Ball’s Falls Conservation Area is one of my favourite places to visit for a scenic hike during any time of the year! Not only do you get two pretty waterfalls, but you can also check out the historic Glen Elgin Village and its buildings and kiln ruins.

It’s a fun spot to visit with kids and the hiking trails aren’t strenuous. If you’re looking to get your fill of waterfalls without hiking for hours, this is your place to visit.

Park and pay at the Centre for Conservation, or park along Glen Elgin Rd and hike in the back way on Twenty Valley Trail for free. It’s a longer hike and you’ll have a steep set of stairs to climb up, but if you’re looking to save some money this is the best way to do it.

Cost: $14.75 for the driver of the vehicle ($11.25/senior or student) plus $5 for each additional passenger ($4 for senior/student). Maximum charge is $30/car.

Navigating Niagara Tip: If you’re a Lincoln Pelham Public Library member, you can borrow a NPCA NaturePlus Pass for up to a week, and save on admission!

3. Short Hills Provincial Park

Short Hills Conservation Area is a perfect place to visit if you’re looking for trails and waterfalls.

Whether you choose to hike the short (and accessible!) Paleozoic loop (0.8 km/30 min) to see Swayze Falls, the trail to Terrace Creek Falls (4.6 km/2 hours), or complete the entire Swayze Falls + Terrace Creek Loop and see both waterfalls, the choice is up to you! 

There are three parking lots to choose from so pick your trail ahead of time and find the best place to park.

4. Louth Conservation Area

Louth Conservation Area is tucked away down the street from Sue Ann Staff Winery. It’s part of the Bruce Trail, giving you plenty of options to follow along to Rockway or Ball’s Falls.

The trail is also a short 1.8 km loop here, which is great for kids! There is a beautiful waterfall hike, not far from the parking lot.

5. Rockway Conservation Area

Another one of my favourite places for a waterfall hike is at Rockway Conservation Area nestled in picturesque Fifteen Mile Creek valley.

There are two main waterfalls you can hike to here, including a stunning 64 ft waterfall and a mesmerizing 40 ft waterfall where you can see fish in the warmer months. There are a number of smaller waterfalls you will spot along the trails, too.

The trails are so peaceful here and the trees loom above you. The forest here is made up of mature Sugar Maples, Black Walnut, and Sycamore.

An interesting tidbit of info is Rockway was once used as a salt spring, and had some of the best quality and quantity of salt on Ontario, dating back to 1792!

Navigating Niagara tip: If you’re looking to save some money and if you’re up for a longer hike, park for free at Louth Conservation Area or at Short Hills Conservation Area and hike to Rockway.

6. DeCew Falls

Up for some scenic views? Head to DeCew Falls! You’ll first see Morningstar Mill originally built in 1872 which makes for beautiful photos. During warmer months you may be able to enter the mill when staff are on-site.

Part of the trails here form the Bruce Trail and the Laura Secord Legacy Trail, honouring Canada’s famous heroine and her role in warning the British of an American attack during the War of 1812.

There are two waterfalls to see here: Upper DeCew Falls and Lower DeCew Falls, the latter of which is easier to access. You can do so by following the Bruce Trail until the trail turns a sharp right; take a left and follow the river bank down, but watch your step because there is no marked trail.

You can continue up the creek to reach Upper DeCew Falls, but because of its difficulty (and history of numerous rescues needed!), I only recommend fit and experienced hikers to attempt it.

Navigating Niagara Tip: Morningstar Mill is closed until 2025 for major restoration work and no parking is available on premise. You can hike from Short Hills or from DeCew House Heritage Park and still enjoy the trails.

Right at the heart of it all is the Clifton Hill Fun Pass, offering bundled access to 6 top attractions for one set price. But is it a great deal for some classic Niagara Falls fun, or just another touristy gimmick? 

We bought these passes to experience Clifton Hill with our niece, and we had a blast. It’s a great package if you anticipate doing a few attractions, but there are great things and potential not-so-ideal things about buying this pass – so let’s break down what’s included, the pros and cons, and whether it’s the right fit for your visit!

The Clifton Hill Fun Pass is $39.95 for adults and $26.95 for children under 12. During the fall, winter, and early spring you can grab these for $34.95 and $22.95. You can purchase your passes online.

If you are a Costco member, you can snag these passes cheaper, even during the busy summer season. We picked up ours for $32.99/adults and $21.99/kids. I strongly recommend purchasing them from Costco if you can swing it. Clifton Hill Fun Passes are good for one year from date of purchase and you do not have to use all the attractions in one day. 

What’s included in the Clifton Hill Fun Pass?

If you’re planning a trip to Niagara Falls and considering the Clifton Hill Fun Pass, you’re likely wondering: Is it worth it? This pass offers access to six popular attractions at a discounted rate, which is great if you’re visiting Niagara Falls on a budget.

Any savings helps – because visiting the Falls can get really expensive. Clifton Hill is notorious for being pricey, and for this reason we never dine here, either. If you’re looking for a day of fun and want to grab something to eat afterwards, there are plenty of awesome places to eat on a budget in Niagara Falls!

1. Niagara SkyWheel

The Niagara SkyWheel is an iconic part of Niagara Falls’ landmarks! This 175-foot tall ferris wheel offers amazing views of Niagara Falls and the surrounding area! What I love the most is that each couple or family gets their own climate-controlled gondola (making it a great year-round attraction) and you don’t need to worry about sharing the experience with people you don’t know. 

The SkyWheel makes 3 full revolutions and regardless of whether you choose to ride it day or night, the views are spectacular. Plus, if you can time it right, it’s an amazing spot to watch the fireworks in Niagara Falls!

2. Zombie Attack

While this may be too scary for young kids, we had a blast with our 12 year old niece at Zombie Attack! This large theatre-type activity has plenty of seating with room for 36 that is classified as a XD Dark Ride Theater – meaning it’s a motion simulator, and allows you to feel the bumps and turns throughout the ride. 

It’s 3D, so you’ll be wearing glasses and will be seat-buckled in, and there’s a blaster gun to your side to aim and shoot at the zombies. We were laughing the whole time. At the end there’s a high score leaderboard put up on the screen, and while I tried my heart out, Dana actually got the top score!

I thought I’d like this activity the least but we had a ton of fun here.

3. Ghost Blasters Dark Ride

Located inside the Great Canadian Midway, Ghost Blasters Dark Ride is a fun and entertaining ride for people of all ages. This interactive black-light adventure features animatronic characters and animated props (like ghosts, skeletons, and goblins) and you’re taken through on a track with a laser gun to blast them away! Your score is kept track of, which makes it a ton of fun if you’re riding with someone else.

This is one of those activities that’s fun to do if you’re not waiting in line for ages – so get there early because it can get quite busy. We attempted this during the summer and the lineup was jam-packed, but when we went back in early spring on a Sunday morning we got right on. Timing can be everything!

4. Movieland Wax Museum

The Movieland Wax Museum in Niagara Falls offers a journey through the world of movies and pop culture! Featuring wax figures of famous celebrities, actors, and musicians, from classic Hollywood icons to today’s biggest stars, it’s a fun way to get up close to your idols set in movie scenes.

Keep in mind, this isn’t the same caliber of Ripley’s or Madame Tussauds (at all, really), and these wax figures made us laugh out loud with how they looked (because truthfully, most of them really don’t look like who they’re supposed to be), but it’s a super fun thing to do as a family and was certainly memorable!

5. Carnival Chaos OR Toy Store 4D

Your pass includes a choice of Carnival Chaos or Toy Store 4D. Since Carnival Chaos is a similar activity to Ghost Blasters and Zombie Attack (with laser targets) we opted for Toy Store 4D. 

It’s geared towards younger kids, but it was pretty cute to experience this motion simulator, where you’re aboard a vintage toy plane and soar through the toy store, dodging toys along the way. There’s up to 2 G’s of acceleration and seats are capable of 400 movements per second – making this experience almost lifelike!

I would say Carnival Chaos is more for older kids as you’re essentially blasting a laser gun at freaky carnival characters in a dark demonic setting. There are four riders to a cart on this ride simulator with 3D animation and sounds. Keep track of your high score and see who comes out ahead!

6. Wizard’s Golf OR Dinosaur Adventure Golf

Your Clifton Hill Fun Pass also includes a choice of two mini putt options: Wizard’s Golf (indoor) or Dinosaur Adventure Golf (outdoor).

On a beautiful day, Dinosaur Adventure Golf is a great option. There’s a huge volcano that goes off every so often (which is fun to watch from the SkyWheel, too!). You have a choice of an easier or more difficult course and it is Canada’s largest mini golf attraction! With 36 holes, you could easily spend a couple hours putting your way around 50 huge dinosaurs (some reaching 30 feet tall!).

For year-round fun, Wizard’s Golf is a fantastic option. We had a blast doing this! You’re underground in a glow-in-the-dark mini golf experience, themed to wizards and witches!

There are 18 fun holes to play that don’t take a long time to do, but the courses and decor is awesome. Your ball glows in the dark so you won’t have to worry about losing it! This was an activity we enjoyed so much we’d come back and do it again, even without the pass.

How much money do you save?

If you break down all the attractions and price them out individually, you’ll see that you will easily save money by purchasing the Fun Pass. The SkyWheel tickets alone are $15!

*Prices range based on chosen activity and when (and where) the Clifton Hill Fun Pass is purchased. Costco provides the best savings, as does visiting during the off-season.

Pros of the Clifton Hill Fun Pass

• Cost Savings: The pass saves you upwards of $30+ compared to buying individual tickets.
• Convenience: Having one pass for multiple attractions makes things easier – no need to line up for tickets – just scan your card at the turnstile!
• Flexibility: You have up to one year from the date of purchase to use the pass, and you can visit the attractions in any order.
• Family-Friendly: The attractions cater to a wide range of ages, making it suitable for families.
• Walkability: All attractions are located on Clifton Hill, within walking distance of each other.

Cons of the Clifton Hill Fun Pass

While I don’t really consider these cons, you have to really think about if these attractions are something you are interested in. There is a lot of cost savings, so if you’re looking for some family fun it’s definitely worthwhile, but if there are certain attractions you really want to do, this may not be the pass for you.

• Not Everything is Included: Keep in mind that Clifton Hill has many other popular attractions (like haunted houses, the Speedway, and the arcade) that are not included in Clifton Hill Fun Pass. If your main interests lie outside of the included list, the pass might not be worth it.
• Time Commitment: To truly get your money’s worth, you’ll need to dedicate a significant portion of your day to Clifton Hill and the included attractions. If you have limited time in Niagara Falls, you might prefer to pick and choose a few other experiences. This also depends on when you go, because in the early spring, fall, and winter in Niagara Falls, the crowds are pretty minimal and you can walk right up to these activities. We did half of our pass in an hour in early spring, but spent a couple hours doing the remaining three activities in the middle of the summer.
• Interest in all Attractions: Are you actually interested in doing all the included activities? If you have no desire to play mini-golf or aren’t a fan of 4D rides, you’re essentially paying for experiences you won’t use.
• Potential for Crowds: Clifton Hill can get very crowded, especially during peak season! This means you might still face lineups even with the Fun Pass, potentially eating into your time (if you’re short on that).

Tips for Maximizing Your Fun Pass

• Purchase Online: Buying the pass online is convenient – just print off your confirmation and redeem your passes at any of the attractions listed on the Fun Pass to receive your card. You can also purchase your pass at any of the attractions.
• Visit During Off-Peak Hours: To avoid crowds, consider visiting attractions early in the day or during weekdays, or off-season.
• Plan Ahead: Decide in advance which mini-golf and 4D ride options you prefer to make the most of your time. 

Is the Clifton Hill Fun Pass Worth It?

If you’re planning to experience multiple attractions on Clifton Hill, the Fun Pass offers excellent value and convenience. It’s worthwhile for families and first-time visitors looking to enjoy a variety of entertainment options and for families looking for ways to entertain their kids beyond the waterfalls.

However, if you’re only interested in one or two attractions, and would rather focus on the unique ways to experience Niagara Falls, or even the free things to do in Niagara Falls (because there are a lot!), purchasing individual tickets might be a better option.

You can also check coupon booklets around the Falls or at your hotel if you’re staying for a day or two – there are always some savings to be found.

We loved these passes and it was such a fun way to spend time with our niece in Niagara Falls. If you have the time and are looking for a fun outing, that’s what you’ll get.

We weren’t concerned about what we were doing, but rather just looking for a way to spend time together and share some laughs. The most important thing to us is that our niece had fun – nothing else mattered!

We also loved that we had a year to use it, and broke up the visit in two trips. You can easily do all of the attractions in a day, too. With attractions opening up at 10:00 am and staying open late (some of them until 2:00 am!) you have plenty of time to experience these activities.

For us, the Clifton Hill Fun Pass was definitely worth it, and we will do it again, too!

Where to Park

If you have the Niagara Parks Annual Parking Pass, you can park at the nearest parking lot that is included in the parking pass, which would be Niagara Parks Rainbow Bridge parking lot at 4348 Hiram Street (behind Bird Kingdom). From here it’s about a 10 minute walk to Clifton Hill. 

You can also use your parking pass at Victoria Place Restaurant, but parking is extremely limited and unless if you get there really early, you likely won’t find a parking spot.

If that parking lot is full, or you want to park a bit closer, there are a few independent parking lots surrounding Clifton Hill for as little as $5/hour. However, since these are independently owned, it’s known that the rates can change throughout the day.

There is also a massive parking lot along Clifton Hill. I have seen that parking lot charge anywhere from $15-$30 for the day.

You can also hop on the WEGO (which is free if you have a Niagara Falls Pass or Niagara Parks Annual Pass) and connects to a variety of stops in Niagara Falls.

And in the Niagara Region, we’re lucky to have some stunning spots where early birds are rewarded with jaw-dropping sunrises. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or someone looking for a peaceful way to start the day, these sunrise locations in Niagara will make setting your alarm totally worth it.

1. Niagara Falls

Yes, the Falls themselves! While the thundering water is the main event, the sunrise in Niagara Falls is truly something special. Head to Queen Victoria Park or Table Rock for an east-facing view, where the morning light casts a warm glow over the mist.

If you catch it on a clear morning, you might even see a rainbow forming as the sun hits the spray.

Of course, if getting out at the crack of dawn isn’t your thing but you really want to see an epic sunrise, book yourself into a Fallsview hotel room for incredible views of Niagara Falls early in the morning.

2. Beamer Memorial Conservation Area (Grimsby)

Known more for its panoramic views of the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario, Beamer Memorial is an incredible spot for sunrises. The lookout point, perched high above Grimsby, gives you a sweeping, unobstructed view to the east.

Explore down into the ravine of Forty Mile Creek, or connect along the Bruce Trail from here, if you’re looking to stretch your legs a bit more.

Just allow yourself an extra 10-15 minutes to get from the parking lot to the lookout point!

3. Charles Daley Park (Lincoln)

Located where Fifteen and Sixteen Mile Creeks meet Lake Ontario, Charles Daley Park is a fantastic sunrise spot with both sandy beach and grassy picnic areas. The calm water often mirrors the sky, making for picture-perfect reflections.

It’s also less crowded than some of the more well-known locations(especially so early in the morning), so you might just have the sunrise all to yourself (like I have)!

4. Glenridge Quarry Naturalization Site (St. Catharines)

You might not expect an old landfill to be one of the best places to watch the sunrise, but Glenridge Quarry is full of surprises. It might be one of the best places I’ve seen the sunrise around here!

The winding trails lead to higher ground where the sun peeks over the Niagara Escarpment. Early morning fog and dew give the area a dreamlike quality that’s absolutely worth the walk.

5. Port Dalhousie (St. Catharines)

With its historic carousel, marina, and iconic pier, Port Dalhousie is a postcard-perfect place to greet the day. Walk out along the east pier for panoramic views over Lake Ontario as the sun rises behind you, illuminating the water and the Port’s charming shoreline. Head to Balzac’s Coffee Roasters or Rozie’s Cafe for coffee or breakfast afterwards!

6. Jones Beach (St. Catharines)

Tucked between Port Weller and Port Dalhousie, Jones Beach is a quiet, scenic spot for early risers. The east-facing shoreline gives you an ideal vantage point for watching the sun creep up over the horizon. It’s especially peaceful here at sunrise, with just the sound of waves and birds to keep you company. It’s completely flat and the main path is gravel, making it a great option for an accessible trail, or after rain.

7. Morgan’s Point Conservation Area (Wainfleet)

Located on the shores of Lake Erie, Morgan’s Point offers a unique perspective. While Lake Erie isn’t normally a spot you’d go to catch the sunrise (as it faces slightly southwest), early light still spills across the water beautifully.

The rugged limestone shoreline and gentle waves give this area a raw feel that’s hard to beat at sunrise.

8. Niagara-on-the-Lake Waterfront

The Niagara-on-the-Lake shoreline is famous for its sunsets, but it has a few secret sunrise spots too. Head to Queen’s Royal Park for a serene view of the morning light glinting off the Niagara River as it meets Lake Ontario. On a clear day, you can even see the Toronto skyline begin to glow across the lake.

I’ll be the first to admit that Niagara Falls – while definitely a bucket list location – can be expensive. This amazing natural wonder attracts over 13 million visitors annually, and there are plenty of incredible things to see and do.

As with any major travel destination, costs can easily add up when you factor in popular activities. And while there are an abundance of free things to do in Niagara Falls, there are some pretty awesome paid attractions, too.

Fortunately Niagara Parks offers a number of money-saving passes, whether you’re visiting for a quick trip or a local looking to explore what we have in our own backyard.

When It’s Not Worth It

If you’re only visiting once or twice and don’t plan to explore multiple attractions, purchasing individual tickets might be more cost-effective.

If you’re focused on free activities like scenic walks, checking out free sites and parks, or simply enjoying the Falls without entering paid attractions, you won’t get full value from the pass.

If you prefer to visit only one or two attractions and skip the rest, you might be better off buying single tickets for the places you really want to visit.

You’re planning to visit between January – April or October – December. There are a few activities, like the Whirlpool Aero Car, White Water Walk and the full viewing platform at Journey Behind the Falls are closed during the off season, as well as the heritage sites, so you’ve be missing out on those paid activities for your pass.

What About Parking?

The Niagara Parks Annual Pass does not include parking, HOWEVER, I recommend also purchasing the Niagara Parks Parking Pass which is now $50/year but pays for itself in just one visit if you plan to stop at a few locations during your time in Niagara Falls. 

Considering the parking at places like Table Rock and Floral Showhouse are up to $35/flat per day during peak season, the parking pass more than makes sense, and includes passes for 2 vehicles in the same household!

BUT if you don’t want to go to the hassle of purchasing an Annual Parking Pass and are only visiting for a day (with no plans to return in the same year), you can also purchase a day pass for $31.86+ HST online as an add-on option only.

Here’s an example of how much money we saved in 2023 using our Annual Parking Pass:

*I am basing each time we parked at an hourly rate at 1 hour. The Floral Showhouse has increased to $35/day during peak season in 2025, up from $8/hour in previous years.
**Parking passes have increased to $50 in 2025.

The Verdict: Is the Niagara Parks Annual Pass Worth It?

For anyone planning to visit Niagara Falls multiple times in a year, the Niagara Parks Annual Pass is absolutely worth it. The savings add up quickly, especially if you take advantage of the perks and discounts.

We saved almost $700 with the Annual Pass in one year alone, and factoring in the Annual Parking Pass we saved over $1000!!! We made an effort to visit the Falls reguarly on weekends to make sure we got the value out of it.

If you’re local, love day trips, or have out-of-town guests visiting often, this pass makes exploring Niagara Parks a breeze. But if you’re only in town for a short visit and don’t plan on doing many paid attractions, you might be better off with single-entry tickets depending on how much time you have. 

If you only want to do a couple of activities while you’re visiting, I encourage you to look at the Niagara Falls Adventure Passes.There are 3 options to pick from that will save you lots of money, and includes transit on the WEGO. The Adventure Pass Plus also includes a shuttle to Niagara-on-the-Lake which I always recommend visiting if you have the time!

Either way, Niagara Falls is a spectacular destination, and whether you go all-in with an Annual Pass or just soak in the views for free, there’s no wrong way to enjoy this natural wonder!

This majestic sugar maple is not just any tree; it is recognized as the oldest known sugar maple tree in Canada!

This beautiful tree is a must-see while you’re in the area, and it’s the perfect spot for a picnic or just relaxing.  Whether you’re a local looking for a peaceful getaway or a visitor eager to explore the hidden gems of the Niagara Region, the Comfort Maple offers a tranquil and awe-inspiring experience.

A Hidden Gem in Niagara

The Comfort Maple is estimated to be around 500 years old, towering at about 80 feet tall, with a trunk measuring more than 20 feet around. Imagine all the history this tree has witnessed since the 1500s —the arrival of European settlers, the development of the Niagara region, and countless seasonal changes. 

The Ontario Forestry Association has estimated the tree could be almost 550 years old, but this is an approximation since the tree’s rings have never been counted.

Named after the Comfort family, who donated the land to the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority in 1961, this tree has stood as a symbol of longevity and resilience.

Why Visit the Comfort Maple?

Visiting the Comfort Maple is like stepping back in time. Located in a quiet meadow surrounded by farmland, the tree offers a peaceful escape from daily life. It’s a place to reflect on the beauty and power of nature and appreciate the rich history it represents.

The area around the tree has been well-preserved, offering picnic spots and benches where you can sit and admire the maple’s sprawling branches. The site is easily accessible and makes for a perfect stop during a scenic drive through Niagara.

While the tree has been fenced off in recent years to protect it from any further damage by visitors, you can still walk all around it and take in its grandeur. 

A Quiet Place to Relax

If you love the outdoors, the Comfort Maple is a perfect opportunity to soak in the raw beauty of a centuries-old tree. In the fall, the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red, which is my favourite time to visit. Its vibrant orange, red, and yellow leaves make for stunning pictures and is a great spot for some family photos, too! 

The tree’s age alone make it a worthy stop! Knowing that you’re standing next to something that predates much of modern civilization is a humbling experience.

Preserving a Piece of History

Due to its age, and the fact it’s been struck by lightning once or twice (!), the Comfort Maple is protected by supportive cables and even cement in some places to help the branches withstand the weight of time. Conservation efforts are ongoing to ensure this natural treasure continues to thrive for future generations to enjoy. 

While the tree shows some signs of ageing, its massive size and sprawling branches continue to impress. It was placed under the Ontario Heritage Act in June 2000 as a designated heritage tree.

You can even own your very own piece of the Comfort Maple by purchasing a pen made from its fallen branches. It’s made by a local wood turner and proceeds go back into the NPCA. 

How to Get There

The Comfort Maple is located at 2025 Metler Road in Fenwick, not far from St. Catharines or Fonthill. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Niagara Falls, making it a great addition to a day trip exploring the Niagara Region.

If you visit during the spring, I recommend checking out some nearby tulip farms or make a day of it by enjoying a winery lunch in Lincoln or taking a waterfall hike while you’re in the area.

There is a small parking area, and the site is easy to access, even for those with limited mobility.

The laneway is easy to drive pass, so I recommend putting into your GPS. The sign at the end of the single-car lane is faded so it’s best to know exactly where to turn in!

The Niagara Region is one of the most haunted areas in Canada, and much of that has to do with its bloody past with the War of 1812. From historic forts and inns to eerie tunnels and cemeteries, there’s a chilling tale waiting around every corner.

One of my favourite things to do in the fall is to check out some spooky spots in the region – whether it’s cemetery tours or historic buildings with a past. Let’s explore some of the most famous haunted spots in Niagara. So far I’ve been able to find 13 haunted spots in Niagara – somewhat a coincidence – or is it a lucky number?

1. Old Fort Erie

As the site of one of the bloodiest battles in the War of 1812, Old Fort Erie is steeped in eerie tales. Visitors have reported seeing two ghostly soldiers wandering in the darkness—one without hands, the other without a head.

Inside the Officers’ quarters, you’ll find the original bed of Captain Kingsley, who died here after months of fever, hallucinations, and mercury poisoning. His restless spirit is said to haunt the room, with staff and visitors noticing disturbed bed sheets, unexplained footsteps, and mysteriously moving doors and windows.

You can visit Old Fort Erie for yourself and even join a ghost tour when they’re offered – you may even experience some creepy things for yourself! We visited during a very still, smoke-ridden night which cast an eerie haze over the fort. I’m not sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me, but you’ll feel as though you’re being watched.

Reported Stories

The sheets from Captain Kingsley’s bed can be found strewn about, as well as footsteps have been heard and windows and doors are known to move without being touched. Shadows and movement have been seen in windows when no one else was on the property.

2. Fort George

Built between 1796 and 1799, Fort George served as a crucial British military outpost during the War of 1812. The fort was a key strategic location, overlooking the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. It witnessed intense battles, including the Battle of Queenston Heights, and played a significant role in the defense of Upper Canada.

Despite being captured and destroyed by American forces in 1813, the fort was later rebuilt and remains a historic landmark today, which can be visited during a trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake from spring to late fall (perfect for a spooky stop!).

Reported Stories

 It’s been reported that Fort George is haunted by the spirits of soldiers and their families. Visitors and staff have seen a young woman’s ghost occupying the officer’s quarters, and a man has been seen peering out from behind bunk beds and following visitors around. There’s also a peaceful spirit seen on the beds. It’s not upcoming to experience doors opening and slamming shut on their own.

3. Prince of Wales Hotel

The Prince of Wales Hotel is a historic landmark in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It’s a well-known place to go for afternoon tea in Niagara and has hosted countless guests over the years, including royalty, celebrities, and politicians.  Built in 1864, it has 110 rooms, although there’s one in particular whose guest hasn’t checked out! 

It’s said to be haunted by Molly McGuire, a woman who was waiting for her husband to return during the War of 1812 when an American soldier – assuming she was a British enemy – pierced her with his bayonet.

Reported Stories

Molly’s old bedroom, Room 207, has been reported to have lights turn on and off and sounds of footsteps during the night. You can book a night at Prince of Wales Hotel for a chance to experience her presence yourself – if you dare!

4. The Olde Angel Inn

The Olde Angel Inn is a  historic inn in Niagara-on-the-Lake that served as a popular gathering place for soldiers and travellers during the War of 1812. Dating back to the late 1700s as a coach house, its exposed beams and plank floors still echo tales from over 200 years ago.

The inn has also been associated with various historical figures, such as John Graves Simcoe (the first Lieutenant-Governor); Alexander Mackenzie (explorer), and Prince Edward (father of the future Queen Victoria!).

There is one legend told over the years, dating back to the 1820s. Captain Colin Swayze, a Canadian militia officer, was killed at the inn during the American invasion of May 1813. He delayed joining the British retreat so he could see his lover.

He hid in an empty barrel in the cellar and the Americans used their bayonets to pierce every corner of possible concealment, when he met his untimely end.

Reported Stories

Colin has been seen walking the Inn at night looking for his sweetheart. Noises have been heard coming from the empty dining room, faucets randomly turned on, and objects have been found rearranged, but it’s said he will remain harmless as long as the British flag flies over the Olde Angel Inn.

5. The Screaming Tunnel

This chilling tunnel, built in the early 1900s near Niagara Falls, originally served as a drainage system for nearby farms and a footpath for farmers to cross the railway tracks. However, its history is steeped in eerie legends. One haunting tale of the Screaming Tunnel tells of a young girl, tragically murdered by her father, whose body was burned in the tunnel. 

Another story speaks of a girl fleeing a farmhouse fire, her clothes ablaze, as she ran toward the tunnel, screaming, only to perish while trying to put out the flames beneath a passing train. Whether these stories hold any truth or not, stepping into this dark, graffiti-covered tunnel—where ominous words like “You will burn” are scrawled—sends shivers down your spine.

I’ve gone through here so many times as it’s part of the Bruce Trail, but if you aren’t up for a hike you can easily access it by car by driving to the end of Warner Rd (by Woodend Conservation Area).

Reported Stories

According to legend, if you light a match at midnight and wait for the flame to die, the distant cries of a little girl will echo through the tunnel. While I haven’t personally seen or heard anything out of the ordinary – I’ve only been during the day and it’s certainly too creepy for me to go at night!

6. Brockamour Manor Bed and Breakfast

Built in 1809, Brockamour Manor is a Victorian-era mansion in Niagara-on-the-Lake that has been converted into a bed and breakfast. The property first belonged to Mohawk Chief, Joseph Brant, before being acquired by Captain John Powell for his wife, Isabella.

It was often visited by Isabella’s sister Sophia, and a visitor – Isaac Brock. He and Sophia fell in love and when tension grew between the Americans and the British in the early 1800s, Brock went from one end of Upper Canada to the other. A secret engagement happened between return visits.

On October 13, 1812, Brock charged into war at the Battle of Queenston Heights when the Americans attacked, only briefly stopping to stay goodbye to Sophia. Brock died during the battle and Sophie was left inconsolable. She stayed at the mansion until she died young – reportedly of a broken heart. Brockamour Manor translates to “Love of Brock.”

Reported Stories

Guests have reported that they’ve seen “Sobbing Sophia” drifting through the halls of Brockamour Manor. Though she’s sad, she’s reportedly a friendly spirit.

7. The Blue Ghost Tunnel

The Blue Ghost Tunnel, also known as the Merritton Tunnel, was constructed in 1875, running beneath what was once the original Welland Canal. Originally built as a railway tunnel to cross the canal, it stretches over 700 feet and has a dark history marked by numerous tragic accidents.

More than 100 workers lost their lives while constructing the tunnel and nearby canal, including a 14-year-old boy who was crushed by a massive boulder. Train accidents also plagued the tunnel, with one devastating head-on collision claiming the lives of both firemen aboard the trains.

Entering the tunnel is a chilling experience. It’s perpetually muddy, with a steady dripping echoing through the cold, pitch-black passageway. 

Reported Stories

Visitors often describe an eerie atmosphere, reporting sightings of a mysterious blue mist at dusk, strange sounds like children crying, and unsettling sensations—some even feel as though they’re being pushed deeper into the darkness.

Important info: If you decide to visit, note that it’s located on GM property that is heavily patrolled. There is a 1.5 km hike down an abandoned road beside the GM plant that’s labelled as off-limits – so enter at your own risk!

8. Drummond Hill Cemetery

Some of the most intense battles of the War of 1812 raged at Drummond Hill, where nearly 1,700 British, Canadian, and American soldiers met their fate—killed, wounded, or captured.

The cemetery now rests as the final home for these soldiers and early settlers (including Laura Secord!), with many claiming to witness ghostly orbs, mysterious mists, and flickering lights. You might even catch a glimpse of a soldier’s apparition or hear the echo of distant footsteps.

Reported Stories

Many visitors say they feel watched as they wander the grounds. Do you dare take a stroll through Drummond Hill Cemetery? If you want to, consider joining a cemetery tour in October led by costumed guides and learn about one of Canada’s most historic cemeteries.

9. Welland Museum

Built in 1923, the Welland Museum originally served as the city’s library. Interestingly, no hauntings were reported during its time as a library, leading some to believe the spirits are tied to the artifacts rather than the building.

The original museum stood on land owned by the Moore family, Quakers who emigrated from the U.S. in the late 1700s. The current site was also home to Welland’s first hospital, opened in 1906, where numerous deaths likely occurred. Additionally, a property from the late 1800s to early 1900s could explain the paranormal activity.

Reported Stories

The belongings of the Moore family were moved with the museum; and as belongings are thought to carry spirits with them, this could be the explanation for strange happenings at the Museum, like objects being moved and misplaced down different levels of the building.

Others have seen a little girl running down a hallway on the lower level. She doesn’t seem unhappy, but she’s been known to come up close to whoever sees her with a finger over her mouth saying “shush.”

10. Niagara-on-the-Lake Courthouse

Niagara-on-the-Lake, one of Canada’s oldest towns, is known for its ghost stories, and the Old Courthouse is no exception. This historic building has witnessed shady politics and chilling trials, with some saying the ghost of Judge Edward Campbell still haunts it.

Judge Campbell, who died of pneumonia at 54, once complained the cold stone building would be his end. Ron Dale, who now works in Campbell’s former office, has noticed his thermostat mysteriously turning up, hinting the judge might still be around.

Reported Stories

The Courthouse, also the original home of the Shaw Festival, has had its share of eerie events. People have reported cold spots, a sense of being watched, and a chandelier crashing down on a janitor—possibly linked to the trials held here long ago.

11. Nelles Manor

Nelles Manor, located along the Niagara Escarpment in Grimsby, is steeped in over 220 years of history, including witnessing the War of 1812 right at its doorstep during the Battle of the Forty. This grand manor has also been the site of unexplained paranormal activity, with both volunteers and visitors reporting strange occurrences.

Reported Stories

Restored to its original 1798 glory, Nelles Manor’s spirits are more friendly than frightening. Paranormal investigators have visited the manor multiple times, capturing recordings of children’s voices, women whispering, and footsteps in the hallway.

Some visitors have even reported hearing the sound of someone setting the table! You can join a Spirit Whispers tour in October and get to know some of the friendly spirits residing at Nelles Manor.

12. Niagara Parks Power Station

The Niagara Parks Power Station began construction in 1901 and played a vital role in the development of Niagara Falls. It’s actually one of my favourite things to do in Niagara Falls and is definitely worth checking out during a visit. 

The Power Station was a huge undertaking and required hundreds of workers to make its construction come to fruition. It’s hard to believe that the tailrace tunnel was excavated only by using shovels, pickaxes, dynamite, and actual horsepower. Understandably, the workers faced a number of unprecedented challenges and accidents were not uncommon.

However, the most famous story about the Niagara Parks Power Station is that of Annette Rankine, wife of William Rankine, the founder of the Canadian Niagara Power Company. Sadly, William died only a few short months after the Power Station completed construction and not long after their wedding. Annette spiralled into depression and disappeared.

Reported Stories

Staff have told stories of seeing a well-to-do woman in a fur coat moving around the thrust deck below the generators. It’s believed to be Annette looking for her husband.

13. Breckenridge-Hawley Estate

Built in 1818, the Breckenridge-Hawley Estate in Niagara-on-the-Lake has a long history of paranormal activity, with sightings dating back to the late 1800s. Major Charles Stanley Herring, a British Army officer, once claimed to see a woman in a long grey dress who appeared and vanished like smoke.

In 1953, Aileen and Frank Hawley bought the estate, unaware of its haunted past. They quickly noticed strange occurrences, like knocks on their front and back doors with no one in sight. Soon, they frequently saw “the lady in grey,” whom they affectionately named Elizabeth. A psychic later revealed that Elizabeth was a former resident who died in the 1800s after caring for her elderly parents.

Reported Stories

Elizabeth has been said to appear and disappear throughout the property. The property has been sold, but it’s expected Elizabeth is still around. While her presence isn’t negative – she seems to be checking if everything is ok – she has been known to be unwelcoming to unwanted visitors. Since this is private property, it’s best to not go trespassing!

Haunted Niagara – What Will You Experience?
