Grimsby is a perfect place to stop on the way to or from Niagara Falls or Niagara-on-the-Lake, or if you’re just looking for a peaceful place to enjoy a quiet day.

1. Take a Stroll Through the Painted Ladies of Grimsby Beach

Once a 19th-century Methodist camp, Grimsby Beach is now one of the most colorful and Instagram-worthy spots in the Niagara region. The Painted Ladies of Grimsby Beach are whimsical, candy-colored Victorian cottages that look like something straight out of a fairytale!

Back in the mid-1800s, Methodists would flock to this spot for week-long summer revivals, camping out under the stars. As the gatherings grew, so did the need for more permanent housing—enter the charming Victorian cottages you see today!

Now, you can wander through this one-of-a-kind neighborhood, soaking in the vibrant colours and whimsical details of the Painted Ladies. Whether you’re up for a relaxed stroll or looking for the perfect Insta-worthy backdrop, this quirky little gem is a must-visit!

P.S. Please be respectful of this area, and don’t venture onto properties just for a photo!

2. Hike the Niagara Escarpment at Beamer Memorial Conservation Area

If you’re all about the great outdoors and amazing views, Beamer Memorial Conservation Area is the place to visit.

Perched along the Niagara Escarpment, this spot is packed with scenic hiking trails, epic lookout points, and even a seasonal hawk migration viewing area—how cool is that? It’s hands down one of the best spots to see the fall colours in Niagara, too.

If you want to add on to your hiking, this is a great place to link up to the Bruce Trail – Canada’s oldest and longest marked footpath! The Grimsby section is a perfect mix of rugged terrain, peaceful forest paths, and breathtaking views that’ll make you forget all about city life. 

3. Sip & Savour at Local Wineries and Breweries

Grimsby is a dream for wine and craft beverage lovers!

There are numerous wineries within  a stone’s throw of Grimsby, like Leaning Post Winery right on the border of Grimsby and Stoney Creek, or Peninsula Ridge Estates Winery (a perfect spot for brunch!)  just at the end of Beamsville and Grimsby. Head down Highway 8 through Beamsville and you’ll find signs for wineries at every turn!

Prefer spirits? Head on over to Forty Creek Distillery for a free whisky tasting and learn the history behind their whisky and how it’s made. You can also head down the street to Dillon’s Small Batch Distillers in Beamsville for a variety of gin, vodka, rye whisky, and specialty cocktails!

If beer is your choice, my favourites in the area are Newark Brewing Company and Bench Brewing Company. Both offer tasty food and great beer. I love the cozy atmosphere of Newark, and Bench’s outdoor beer garden in the summer.

4. Explore the Grimsby Museum

Step back in time and uncover the rich history of the area at the Grimsby Museum! If you love learning new things and discovering local stories, this museum is packed with fascinating exhibits showcasing everything from the area’s early settlers to its deep agricultural roots.

With two exhibition galleries, the museum hosts rotating exhibits that connect Grimsby’s history to the larger Niagara Region, keeping local heritage alive in an engaging way. Plus, their own collection is seriously impressive—over 15,000 artifacts, including historical objects, textiles, artwork, photos, and even archaeological finds!

Want to take your history lesson beyond the museum walls? Join one of their guided walking tours! The Queen’s Lawn Cemetery tour is one of the popular things to do in the fall in Niagara, offering a unique way to explore old engravings, gravestones, and the stories of Grimsby’s past residents.

5. Shop and Dine in Downtown Grimsby

If you stroll through downtown Grimsby, you’ll notice the street is lined with unique shops and restaurants. Whether you’re in the mood for a gourmet meal or a quick coffee break, the local businesses here never disappoint. 

Shop windows come alive with colourful, eye-catching displays, drawing you in for a closer look. In the summer, the streets burst with charm as vibrant flower baskets add a pop of colour to every corner!

You’ll find an array of stores here like a Dutch grocery store, book shop, motor-sports boutique, flower shop, and so much more.

Craving a delicious meal? You have to check out Casa Toscana! This charming spot serves up the freshest dishes, including pasta made in-house with flour imported straight from Italy!

Looking for a laid-back night out with friends and a few laughs? Grab a table at Teddy’s Sports Bar (home of the best wings in town!), the Judge and Jester, Elm Street Cafe Grill, or the Forty Public House. Whether you’re in the mood for daily specials, a cozy pub vibe, or a lively atmosphere, there’s a perfect spot waiting for you!

Need a caffeine fix? Swing by Station 1 Coffee House, Bottega (owned by Casa Toscana), or 416 Coffee for the perfect pick-me-up!

P.S. There are some great places to eat up at Casablanca, too! My favourite spot there is the Olive Board!

6. Relax by the Water at Elizabeth Street Pumphouse

For a perfect lakeside escape, head over to Elizabeth Street Pumphouse. Originally built in 1905 as Grimsby’s water pumping station, this stunning historic building served the community for nearly a century!

Now beautifully restored, it has taken on a new life as a sought-after venue for weddings, baby showers, and family celebrations (this is where I had my bridal shower!).

Beyond its charming architecture, this spot is a local favourite for a peaceful lakeside escape. Whether you’re watching geese glide across the water, enjoying a quiet stroll, or simply soaking in the serene views, it’s the perfect place to unwind.

There is a peaceful War of 1812 Bi-Centennial Peace Garden here too, which commemorates the Engagement at the Forty —an important chapter in Grimsby’s past. Plus, the Forty Mile Creek Trail offers a scenic route winding along Forty Mile Creek up to Ontario Street. If you’re feeling hungry, head to JJ’s on the Docks for a bite to eat at the marina!

7. Discover Local Art at the Grimsby Public Art Gallery

The Grimsby Public Art Gallery is a must-visit for art lovers!  This vibrant gallery celebrates Canadian creativity, featuring works from local, regional, and national artists. With exhibitions rotating every 6-8 weeks, there’s always something fresh and inspiring to see—whether it’s paintings, sculptures, or mixed media masterpieces.

Open seven days a week (and with free admission!), the gallery isn’t just about admiring art. You can also join an art class, attend a lecture, or take part in one of their engaging educational programs.

8. Visit the Farmers’ Market

If you’re in town on Thursdays from Victoria Day Weekend to Thanksgiving, the Grimsby Farmers’ Market is a must-visit if you want to support local.

Held weekly on downtown Main Street, this market offers fresh local produce, baked goods, handmade crafts, and more. It’s a great way to support local farmers and artisans while stocking up on delicious goodies.

9. Step back in Time at Nelles Manor

Step back in time at Nelles Manor Museum, a stunning piece of history that has stood tall for over 220 years! Originally home to the Nelles family, this Georgian gem has seen four generations before being lovingly restored by the Coutts family, preserving its place as one of the Niagara Region’s most treasured landmarks.

But this house isn’t just old (it was built in 1798!)—it’s seen history unfold right on its doorstep! During the Battle of the Forty in the War of 1812, both British and American troops occupied its walls. 

Today, you can tour the beautifully restored home, wander through rooms filled with 19th-century charm, and maybe even encounter a ghostly resident or two – it’s reported Nelles Manor is one of the most haunted places in Niagara!

10. Take a Scenic Drive Along the Wine Route

Grimsby is the gateway to Ontario’s famous wine country, making it the perfect starting point for a scenic drive along the Niagara Wine Route.

With rolling vineyards, charming wineries, and breathtaking views, this drive is pure magic—especially in the fall when the leaves put on a spectacular show! I’ve mentioned it earlier, but the most beautiful drive is along Highway 8 heading towards Vineland. 

The road is right along the escarpment and it winds through Jordan Hollow which is stunning with the changing foliage. Beamsville is a great place to stop by for lunch at one of the many wineries with restaurants in the area. Be sure to pop into Jordan Village for more small town charm and things to do!

A Splash of History

Grimsby Beach, originally known as the Grimsby Park, was established in the mid-1800s as a Methodist camp meeting ground. It quickly became a popular summer destination, drawing in crowds from all over. 

Affluent visitors flocked to Grimsby Beach to enjoy the scenery, swim at the beach, fish, watch the ships dock at the pier, and picnic along the lakeside. The need for accommodations grew and the area flourished with charming cottages. 

In the early 1900s the Methodist group managing Grimsby Beach went bankrupt and it was bought by an American who transformed the area into an amusement park, complete with a casino, midway, roller coaster and merry-go-round!

Over time, the residents and visitors began to paint these homes in an array of delightful colours, giving birth to what we now lovingly call the Painted Ladies.

How to find Grimsby Beach

Exit off the QEW at Bartlett Avenue in Grimsby (Exit 68) and turn towards the lake, away from the escarpment. At the stop sign at Bartlett Ave and Lake Street, turn left. You’ll see a sign for “Historic Grimsby Beach” just past a small strip plaza with a convenience store. 

Turn right onto narrow Betts Laneway and keep left. You’ll come across a small parking lot on the right on Temple Lane.  Park here and take a stroll to admire the uniqueness of these homes!

The lanes are one-way only – so if you can’t find parking at the parking lot, I suggest you park at Grand Ave school on weekends across the street.
